Last Saturday morning Mary
Rice Whiting was one of the
youngest pilots in the United
States. She soloed on the morning
of her 16th birthday. How long
she held the title I don’t know,
since there were probably a good
many other young men and wom
en who were 16 on July 9, and
soloed some time during the day.
Anyhow, she’s developing into a
good smooth pilot, and the Cajn-
den flyers are happy to welcome
her to their ranks.
There has been a good deal of
curiosity about that fast little red
and yellow low wing monoplane
that' has been flying about Cam
den recently. That's a Culver
Cadet. It has an 80 horsepower
Franklin engine, retractible land
ing gear, and cruises about 125
miles an hour, using 4% to 5
gallons of gasoline per hour. It
is smooth and handles nicely.
After flying it a couple of hours
you sort of fall in love with it.
It is comfortable and fairly quiet
You retract the gear manually,
and it is a little awkward at first
but you soon get used to it The
plane was designed for cross
country work, and is not a train
er. A pilot should know the fun
damentals of flight thoroughly be
fore checking out on it I think
such a pilot will find it a very
satisfactory cross-country plane.

other people who have owned

under way. Lt. Jack Stogner,
training officer, is responsible for
this. At the meeting this Friday
night there will be classes on
Theory of Flight formations, and
' radio communication. Lt. Jim
Darby, operations officer, is get
ting the air-ground rescue unit in
shape, and practice will be held
shortly, using aircraft, walkie-
talkies, and ground equipment.
Both senior members and cadets
will take part in this practice.
The Link Trainer should be here
within the next two weeks. It is
possible that we will have a CAP
Liason plane within about a week.
The Camden Squadron is still tak-
tas in new members. Both men
and women are eligible. The
meeting is in the operations build
ing at the airport, Friday night
at 8:30 sharp.
Returned From
Church Conference
The Rev. Stiles B. Lines, rector
of Grace Episcopal church, has re
turned to Camden after attending
a four-day conference of key
clergymen of the Episcopal church
held on the campus of the Uni
versity of the South at Sewanee,
Term., June 27-July 1. The se
lected group of 60 ministers went
to Sewanee as guests of the Na
tional Council of the Episcopal
church from 50 dioceses in 30
states.
The gathering was headed by
the Rev. John Heuss, D. D., of
New York, director of Christian
education for .the national coun
cil Each morning lecture was fol
lowed by a workshop session.
The purposes of the gathering
were to become acquainted with
the educational problems of the
church; to prepare for fuutre use
of the new church school curri
culum and gain understanding of
its educational philosophy; to
study the work of the national
council; to gain workshop prac
tice in parish educational activi
ties and to study diocesan educa
tional planning.
