One disadvantage of feeding
table scraps to the family pup is
that such foods are often too spicy
and may cause digestive disturb
ances. Another disadvantage fre
quently cited by veterinarians is
that when dogs are fed largely on
table scraps, they may not get all
the nutritional elements they need.
Left-overs are all right as a sup
plement to the dog’s diet, however,
provided that the basic ration is
well-balanced and of good quality.

joke file at regular intervals to re
vive the quip, “What horse doctor
treated that poor fellow?’’
Veterinarians along with physi
cians have taken the jibe like good
sports, the American Veterinary
Medical Association points out, but
they probably won’t have to take it
much longer, thanks to the prog;
ress of medical science.
The reason is that veterinary
medicine and human medicine are
being welded closer together
througf 'growing recognition of the
relationship of animal diseases to
human ills.
This doesn't mean that the time
will ever come when veterinarians
will actually treat human patients,
the AVMA explains. But it does
mean that veterinarians have t
place in the human health picture
—and there's nothing funny about
it, regardless Of what gag writers
may think.
Many diseases that afflict human
brings today are transmitted by
animals and cannot be eliminated
until veterinarians eradicate thee
diseases at the sources, the vet
erinary medical association says.
Uhdulaat fever, rabies, erysipel
as, anthrax and sleeping sickness
tre among the long list of diseases
that are pasted from animals to
people and that veterinarians and
phyeiciana are working together
to curb.
The relationship is so close, in
fact, that some leading medical
authorities are urging colleges of
medicine to teach certain veteri
nary subjects, and colleges of vet
erinary medicine to give instruc
tion on human diseases. *
