The chart was prepared by the South Carolina Education Association from the latest available authentic figures
on literacy and per capit*'income. Although it shows some exceptibns, the chart indicates that those South
Carolina counties having the most educated people alto have the highest per capita income*. Richland county,
fo instance, leads the state both in per capita income and in the educational attainment of ita people, while Berkley
county is at the bottom of both columns. Union county, which is highly industrialized, is the most notable excep
tion to the' general rale.
