Sign The Bond Petitions
The Camber Chahiber of Commerce has
adopted a resolution asking the freeholders
of the city to sign the petitions asking City
Council to order an election on the pro
posed bond issue for public improvements.
It is to be hoped that the people will com
ply with this request and will*sign the pe
tition mailed out recently and return at
once. In doing so they will be helping to
save the city the expense of employing
solicitors to seek the signatures.
Less than 200 additional signatures are
now needed to insure the election. It is
known that many who received, the peti
tion through the mail laid it aside expect
ing to give it attention later. Let us hope
that all who did this will now sign it and
return it.
Signing the petition does not obligate the
signer to vote for all or arty of the pro
posed issues. He may vote against all of
them if he elects or he may vote for some
and against others. It simply mearts that
an election can be held.
Who’s Who And Why?
It seems now that the Ashton Williams-
Ransome WillianA-Maxie Collins so-called
National Democratic party in South is now
split up itself and that when Vice Preddent
Barkley comes to Columbia—if he does
come—he will have plenty to do to try to
pour oil among his own bretheren instead
of trying to split the States Rights Demo
crats, . who are thoroughly enjoying the
comedy the Ashton Williams-Jtansome Wil-
liams-Maxie Collins crowd is staging.
The first intimation that all was not well
in t^e “NMional Dem
South Carolina" came
emecratic, party of
in this diripatch from
Brim Rykard, who beats the tom toms for
that crowd, to the Anderson Independent:
“Maxie C. Collins, previously connected
with the National Democratic Party in
Soi£f*Carolina, is not now recognized'by
therNfetioiifal Democratic committee, it wai
reported in Columbia this afternoon.
“Collins sent out a letter this week in
viting certain South Carolinians to attend
the Berkeley dinner here July 1 but it*was
reported that his connection has ceased.
‘This reporter was asked to comimini
bate with national Democratic headquart
ers in Washington to determine whether he
is still heading the party. It was reported
that Ashton H. Williams of Lake City, na
tional committeeman, and former gbver
nor Ransome Williams, finance director,
were in charge of activities in^he state.
The next day after this dispatch appear
ed in The Independent, the two Williams’
announced that Ransome Williams was in
charge of the Barkley dinner, and it was
intimated that Collins had nothing to do
with it. r )
Collins then issued a statement in which
he said that “my title and authority” as
secretary of the National Democratic party
group in this state “rests on the same basis
as that of Ashton Williams as national com
mitteeman.”
( So when .Mr. Barkley ponies to Colum
bia—if he does come—he will have to get
the Truman Democrats together and get
them straightened out among themselves
before he tries to hypnotize the States
Righ^ers.
The row between the handfull of Tru
man Democrats reminds us of the rows in
other years among the handfull of Repub
licans in this state which eventually result
ed in them splitting up into two factions
Will the Truman Democrats nowsplit up
into two factions also?
There is an old saying that if you’ll look
around you can always find somebody in
worse fix than you are, it matters not how
bad a fix you may be in. A dispatch from
Austin, Texas, say* that the Texas Legisla
ture is approaching a record session of
171 days, there have been six official fili-
buaters, a Senate committee witness fell

A Display Of Indecency .
A Chieagou writinf to the editor of the
Chicago Tribune says:
“Early this morning I saw three
young morons go swimming in the
nude and afterward stand on Bee rocks
on the lake front just south wf 43rd
street. They appeared to be slightly
under the influence of liquor.
‘The rocks were lined with fisher
men, many of them accompanied by
their womenfolk. To have objected to
the display of indecency would have
resulted in a brawl, as the three hood
lums were armed with long-bladed
pocket knives.
“There was, of course, no law en
forcement officer within blocks. There
never is, on the lake front north of
47th street”
The correspondent was correct in desig
nating the three as “morons” because it is
an old ahd true saying that “want of
decency is want of sense.”
But it is shocking that a city as large as
Chicago does not have police protection
against morons like that. Having gotten by
one time, the three morons will probably
try it again. Now that public attention has
been called perhaps the police will be wait
ing for them next time.
It might be well if this incident would
cause people to stop and think as to whe^
we are going in the matter t>f dress. These
three morons probably thought it was only
a short step from the way they had. seen
some people attired at popular resorts to
the nude.
It Might Work
Senator Millard Tydings, of Maryland,
is quoted as saying that things may speed
up In Congress later this month when the
Senate will be forced out of its spacious
chambers with large public and press gal
leries.
“Whenever the public is missing and
Athene are only a few reporters present,”
Tydings said, “I notice the Senate does
business with more speed.”
Unquestionably many of the talks made
in all legislative bodies are made for pub
lie consumption rather than'for the people
whom the speaker la addressing.
It is not .uncommon for a member of a
•7
Legislature to complain if he is not quoted
by newspaper reporters, and denounce the
reporters, which just goes to show that he
is speaking fbr publicity. ^ •
All of which reminds qs of Sir Lewis Mor
ris, who was complaining to Oscar Wilde
about the neglect of his poems by the press
“It’s a complete conspiracy of silence
against me, a conspiracy of silence,” he ex
claimed. “What ought I to do, Oscar?”
“Join it,” replied Wilde.
If the reporter! didn’t quote legislators
and members of Congress so freely perhaps
they’d quit speaking so much. They might
soon join the silence accorded their re
marks. • *. a
One Difference /
Vice President Barkley is cofhing to
South Carolina for the same purpose exact
ly that Speaker Sam Rayburn came last
October and that is to mal^e a political
speech.
In that respect his visit is no different
from that made by Mr. Reyburn who was
heard by a very small crowd of people.
But—Mr. Barkley is also coming for the
purpose of trying to raise money for the
National Democratic party ampaign fund—
money to be used in electing to Congress
!Xt year people who will support Presi
dent Truman’s civil rights legislation.
In that respect his visit is different from
Mr. Reyburn’s in that no charge was made
to^hear Mr. Reyburn speak w»hile a charge
of $15 is being made to hear Mr. Barkley.
Every person who goes to the Barkley
dinner will be contributing to the fund to
put civil rights legislation across in Con
gress.
The fact that Mr. Barkley is vice presi
dent makes no difference so long as he is
coming on a political mission.
