Section 1. Every person, firm,

ing the month of May, 194i, a
license therefore in (he manner
hereinafter prescribed. Every per
son. firm, company or corporation
commencing business in said city
on or befbre the firat day of May,
1950, shall in Uke manner obtain
a license therefor before entering
upon such calling business, pro
fession, or occupation as herein
after specified. A
Section 2. Every person, firm,
company or corporation engaged

den for the same—by whom all
such licenses shall be issued, and
shall at the time of applying,
make and sign a written state
ment under oath and file it with
the said Clerk and Treasurer, set
ting forth: First, his or her or its
name or style. Second, the calling,
business, profession or occupa
tion for which license is required.
Third, the place where such call
ing, business, profession or occu
pation is to be carried on; gross
annual income, unless application
is being made for a license for a
non-resident, branch or agency
business licensed elsewhere in

The City Council reserves the
right to revoke any license for
any cause which to them may
seem to be just, or to refuse to
issue a license for just cause.
Section 6. The following sum or
sumf of money are required to be
paid to the said Clerk and Treas
urer for a license to carry on the
business, calling, profession or oc
cupation in whole or in part with
in the limits of the City of Cam
den, as in each case specifically
appears.
Class 1
The specific license herefnbe-
low listed for each business or
calling is the minimum license ap
plicable to all the listed business
es and callings of which the
gross income for the last fiscal
year of such business or calling,
did not exceed the sume of $15.-
000.90. To the specific or miai-
udiich case the figures shall be mum license there shall be added
the gross receipts resulting from

agency or branch. Parties in
business on the first of May shall
make such application for new
license and file such written state
ment before May 21st
Section 3. A pmalty of fifteen
per cent Shall be added to all li
censes which are not paid during
the month of May, 1949, except
such ns may become due after
that time. Provided, however, that
immediate payment may be re-
a uired in each and every case aft
te discretion at the said Clerk
and Treasurer and the foregoing
provision shall in no wise stay
or hinder action to enforce im
mediate nayment; which tax and
penalty snail be recovered in the
manner hereinafter prescribed,
and if any person, firm, company
or corporation required so to do
by the. terms of this ordinance
shall refuae or neglect to make
out and deliver to the Clerk and
Treasurer of the City of Camden,
on or before the time herein re
quired the statement provided for
by Section 2 of this ordinance, or
shall make a false statement, or
shall refuse to take and subscribe
an oath or affirmation as to the
truth of sue hstatement, or any
part thereof; or from any cause
shall fail to take out. such li
cense as may be required by this
ordinance, the said Clerk and
Treasurer shall report the case to
the City Manager, who shall pro
ceed to ascertain as nearly as
possible, the business or such per
son, firm, company or corporation
for which he, she or it may be
liable to a license tax therefor and
in case of default for the pur
pose of such investigation, the
said Clerk and Treasurer shall
notify the person, firms, com
panies, or corporation in default
to appear before the Mayor at his
office—at a time stated in said
notice; and also such witnesses as
the Mayor may desire to exam
ine. The witnesses called as afore
said shall be examined by the
Mayor under oath or affirmation,
touching the nature of the busi
ness of such party, and every
thing which may evince the
amount of license tax for which
such party shall be liable.
From the information thus ac
quired the Mayor shall find and
assess the amount of* license tax
due by such party whether he.
she or it attended the investiga
tion or not, and shall add thereto
penalty of fifteen per cent there
of and should such license tax and
penalty be not paid within five
days thereafter, the said Clerk
and Treasurer shall issue an
execution therefor under her
hand, and the seal of the City of
Camden, directed to the chief p!
police of the City of Camden, dr
the Sheriff of Kershaw County in
said State and the said chief oi’
police or sheriff shall proceed to
collect the said license tax ante
penalty, by levy and sale of rea
or personal property, as now pro
vided by law for the collection of
taxes, together with an addition
al five per cent of the whole
amoupt, which shall be the
sheriff’s or chief of police’s com
pensation for making such collec
tion in addition to one dollar for
making such levy, which shall be
paid by delinquent without entry
or‘mileage fees; provided, how
ever, that any person or corpora
tion shall have the right of appeal
to the City Council of Camden
(notice of such appeal having been
given to the Clerk and Treasurer
within five days from the time
of which aucb assessment of li
the sum of $1.50 for each thou
sand dollars or fraction thereof by
which the gross income of such
business or calling exceeded $15,-
000.00 up to $200,900.00. Above
$200,000.00 shall be added the
sum of $1.00 for each thousand
doBnrs or fraction thereof by
which the grow income of such
business or calling exceeded
$300,000.00. Thoee engaging in
busmess in the City but having
no established place of business in
the City, or having an established
place of business Incidental to an
established place of business in
another license collecting city,
