War land II and are deserving of self supporting jobs in which
they can make useful contributions to our community.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Henry Savage, Jr., Mayor of the City
of Camden, do set aside the week of October 3-9, 1948, as Nt-
tional Employ the Physically Handicapped Week, and I call upon
all local officials, all local employers, all local organizations and
all members of this community to assist in placing our handi
capped fellow citizens in gainful employment. Since the South
Carolina State Employment Service is charged, with the respon
sibility, of placing all unemployed workers, including the handi- 4
capped, you are urged to give this agency every assistance. All
employers are urgently requested to place all their iob orders
with the local Employment Service office since their knowledge
and experience will insure that handicapped workers referred to
jobs wm, through proper selection, be fully qualified to perform
the required duties of the position. •

Social Security
Cards Often Used
To Commit Fraud
Every year many business peo
ple are defrauded by individuals
who pass worthless checks, using
social security cards for identifi
cation purposes, according to J. P.
Chick, manager of Rock Hill so
cial security office, which serves
the Camden area.
The Social Security Adminis
tration frequently issi?es warning
to business men not to accept a
social security card to identify a
person cashing a check. Posses
sion of a card does mean a person
has a' bank account, nor does it
always mean he is the individual
he claims to be, for many cards
are lost or stolen each year.
Since social security records
are confidential, it is Impossible
to give addresses to business men
or police officers trying to trace
passers of bad checks. But even
if that were not so, the adminis
tration does not keep a recok of
current addresses.
Chick urges that every in
dividual who has worked in em
ployment covered by the Social
Security Act should get in touch
with the nearest Social Security
field office, when he reaches age
65 whether he expects to continue
working or not. The Social Se
curity Field Office at Rock Hill
serves the (following counties:
Kershaw, Chester, Fairfield, Lan

But one of the reasons is its im
pressive variety. It is not one
book, it is a library of books. What
ever your mood, whatever your
need, there is a page in the Bible,
somewhere, for you.
A Christian will try seriously
to appreciate the whole Bible
and not merely one or two parts
of it. Yet tlfcre is such variety
in It that invariably some per
sons are attracted by one fea
ture of It while another fea
ture makes stronger appeal to
others. - •
Our studies these next three
months will be in “The Literature
of the Bible” and each week we
shall be noticing a different feature.
This week we give a thought to the
tremendous .variety of the Bible,
along with its underlying unity.

Many Types
L OOKING through the Bible you
find all varieties of literary
types; you find poetry and prose;
stories, essays, sermons, biogra
phies, dramas; rhapsodies, love
songs, funeral dirges and battle
hymns.
Here are pages as prosaic as
a telephone book and here are
pages more exciting than any
fietlen. Here are simple,
straightforward ideas that a „
child can understand as seen
as he understands the wards
and here are mysteries so pre
found that the world’s mightiest
and baldest minds shrink back
in awe.
The Bible is not like a piece of
music played on one single instru
ment, like a tune on a piccolo; it
is more like an immense symphony
—the more often we listen to It,
the more we hear in it

seniority affects. Also stress Tru
man’s challenge to Republicans to
impose cloture so Southerners
cannot effectively filibuster
against his non-white legislation.
Such blunt and plain speaking
will be enlightening and very
commendable.”
Many Times
N O ONE knows exactly how long
it took for the Bible to be writ
ten. Let us suppose that the ear
liest parts came from the pen (or
stylus) of Moses, and the latest
part from about 100 years after
Christ (John and the Revelation)'.
If Moses flourished around* 1200
B. C., that would mean that the
Bible was completed 13 centuries
after it was begin. '
In 13 centuries much can hap
pen, and much did. There is hardly
any circumstance or crisis, there is
scarcely any time, however hum
drum or thrilling, which does not
have its match in the Bible. Its
writers were inspired men; they
knew God. But they also knew the
times in which they lived, and thus
can speak to ours -
One Theme
F OR all the
Ri
vast variety of the
Bible, there is in it a deep and
lofty unity. It is bound together
by its mighty purpose, which
throbbed in the heart’s blood of
every man’ who wrote a line of U.
That purpose is to make God real
to man, and to bring man to God
The writers of the Bible may have
had their lighter moments, but they
did not write these pages then.
They wrote under the irre-
sistable impulse, born of the
Holy Spirit, to make plain to
other men what God had re-
veajed to them.
So as you come to the Bible, re
member its purpose is not to make
you admire or revere it as a book;
its great purpose is to be trans
parent, • window through which
you shall see God.

Burning Of City
Refuse WiU Have

The burning of refuse at the
city dump will have to be con
tinued until the proper equipment
can be purchased to dispose of
refuse by the sanitary fill method.
Coot for such equipment will
amount to approximately $9,000
and must be appropriated by the
city commission. The commission
is awaiting the city manager’s
budget for the last six months of
tiie present fiscal year before
committing themselves to a defi
nite appropriation for any city ex
penditure. The budget will assist
the commission to establish a
priority of city needs to avoid a
deficit
