Nattonal Safety Council and the
United States Department of Agri
culture in cooperation with_AeNa-

lihe Farm Equipment Institute, the
American Farm Bureau Federation,
the Farmer’s Union, the National
Grange and many other organiza-
ti<ma Interested in agriculture and
farm life. Each year It la officially
proclaimed by the President of the
United 'Staten.
Past retcords show that one of
every 18 farm residents will suffer
a disabling injury; one out of every
four faems will be the scene of an
accident resulting in a disabling in-
jnry to a farm resident; accideotal
death will occur in one out of
every 320 farm familiea; a disabl
ing injury will strike tome farm

Forest fire losses for the Cam
den forest district for the period
Jply 1, 1M7, through June 30, 1948,
were reported this week by the
disfriet forester. Thti dSlA com
piled from records reported from
each individual’s woods fire, occur-
ing throngb the sis^ counties of
the disulet. revealed that 319 fires
wore fonght by the commission of
forestry per^nnel, together with
cooporstlag landowners and cltl^
’cns. These woods fires burneiBT
over 3,879 acres dr approximately j
0.2 per cent of the total ftwest land j
area protected. The above ia In
comparison to the 834 wxx>ds fires
snd 24,898 acres burned during the
"ffscal year 1946-47^ 1
Reports * from the individual
county, unit’s concern indivate the
following; Chesterfield county, 48
fires, 1,388 acres burned; Kershaw
county, 78 fires, 648 acres burned;
Lancaster county, 32 fires, 1991
acres burned; Lm county, 26 fires,
213 acres burned; Richland comi
ty, 101 fires, 930 acres burned, and
Sumter county had 34 fires, burn
ing 331 acres. • '
The great msjorlty of fires re
ported above were attributed Jo
smokera, debris Wrhjng ajid rail
roads. A total of 31 persons Were
prosecuted under the state fire
law, which prohibits promiscuous
burning. • -
July 28 to 31, being designated
as ‘‘National Farm Safety Week,"
it la urged <that all landoWners
work with local fire control or
ganisations in order that plans may
be laid to insure full cooperation
upon the occurrence of fires.
