ing the trunk, four and a half feet
above the ground Snd noting the
annual growth rings that came out
in-the device used for the‘test.
These nine inches of rings show
the growth for the psst 117 years
and if the figures thus secured are
reckoned aa being representative
of the Inches remaining to the
center of the tree, the tre was be
tween 355 and 360 years of age.
And according to Mr. I.>ehockey,
the monarch of the forest Is still
growlng^ln a normal manner.
A news reporter, with L. E.
Smith, county ranger, and A. A.
Lehockey, district ranger chief,
visited the tree Sunday and found
it rearing its majestic cone laden-
head above a forest of loblolly and
short leaf pine trees.
Incidentally, as best could be
reckoned, this loblolly pjne tree
would yleW about 6,00&^oard feet
of lumber. !
