Colonel Dlcklnsan’s need tor the
Iron man was derived from a duel
which was averted by an adjust

’This duel was to have been between

According to tradition, after the
Smart-Dlckinson affair the iron
man was thrown in the body of
water on the eastern edge of CUim-
den which-is cow the Wateree mill
pond. Years later, when the water
was drawn off to repair the dam,
the iron man waa found and pwed
out by some unknown person to be
used later in a series of duels
which occurred during the years
1878 to 1880.
After the nse of the iron man
passed it became a historic reUc
to the people of Camden. Fete John
son obtained it and kept it at hU
home bn north Pair street, lor many
yaars. Colonel Clark WilUama later
boni^t it and upon hla death it
eras bought from hla estate by
Henry O. Carrleon and given to his
daughter, Mrs. L. W. Boykin, IH.
who now has It at her home.
