C. M. Leonard Winner In Pulpw
Thinnins Contest In This District
C. M, Leonard, of Camden, has been awarded the Pied
mont district prize of $126.00 in the 1947-48 Pulpwood
Thinnipg Contest. His 5-acre plot was declared the best
among 15 northern counties in the state.
Sixteen years ago'this slash pine stand was planted on
1 a sandy soil tope and protected from fire. There are fire

During the winter months 642
man hours were used to mark, cut
and haul the 69.$ cords of pulpwood
from the five acre plot. The gross
income amounted to 1768.12 or
$162.62 per acre. Subtracting labor
and hauling costs of $392.80, the
net profit on a per acre baaU Is
about $74.00. Only 43 per cent of
the total number of trees were
thinned at this time. Mr. Leonard’s

lowered from 34,000 to 82.600. This
decrease in unemployment was re
flected in a decline in the number
of active applications for work on
file at the 30 South Carolina Em
ployment Service offices, the total
declining from 30,282 to 28,310. Vet
erans have on file approximately
46 per cent of the applications. Ol'

plications on file, 1,921 have some
physical handicap.
