Are Given Apples
By Government
Every school child In Kershaw
county was given apples last week
as 798 bushels were distributed to
the 55 schools in the county.
These apples were purchased by
the U. S. Government in the State
of Washington and 55 freight ears
were sent to South Carolina. Ker
shaw county received one entire
car.
These apples were distributed to
every school in the county, both
white and colored, through the cf-
operatlon of the Kershaw County
School Llnch Division of the
partment of Iklucation.
The old rhyme of "an apple for
the teacher" was reversed as teach
ers supervised the distribution of
apples to their students. Students
were given apples at recess and in
the afternoon before going home.
At some schools they were told to
take and eat all they wanted.
These apples represent the sec
ond recent shipment of government
purchased comroc^lties sent to Ker
shaw county for distribution free
Of charge to every school child.
Last week the county received a
large shipment of grapefruit Juice
which has already been sent to the
various schools.
