IK’S DAY THIS YEAR TO
OBSERVED SUNDAY, MAY 9
•■maeiMMRmeiew
Jother’s Day will be observed on 3un<lay, May 9, as
[onal expression of love and reveren<;e for the mothers
Jnly^t^o countries—the United States, and Canada—
iide a day annually to honor mother. And although
[other’s Day is officially only 34 years old, it stems
la tradition of homage of mothers that stretches back
he dim past. «
"enturies before Christ, mothers were held in awe
teverence by Chinese families. The ancient Romans
rated an annual festival in honor of Hilaria, the Moth-
^dess. More than 1,000 years ago, the Nahuan In-
Uf Mexico were holding flower festivals for the Earth
er Goddess, Chicomehuatl.
Seventeenth Century England developed the custom
)ing a-mothering.” Boy and girl apprentices were al
to spend “Mothering Sunday” with their families,
[often brought cakes and plum puddings as gifts.
)ur American Motheris Day is credited to Miss Anna
jrvis, a Sunday .school teacher In 1908 she held a
Drial church service for her mother at the Andrews
[)dist church in Grafton, W. Va.
ihe idea spread first to Philadelphia and then caught
[tjonally. President Wilson in 1914 signed a Congres-
Resoiution setting aside theisecond Sunday in May
jther’s Day and authorizing! Federal display of the
he carnation was adopted as official flower because
. been the favorite of Miss Jarvis’ mother. Today the
has grown into the year’s “most sentimental occa-
when sons and daughters ever3rwhere express their
ciation with gifts and Mother’s Day greeting cards.

SERIOUSl FIRE NARROWLY
AVERTED HERE WEDNESDAY
CAAPT. WILLIAM ANCRUM
«N NAVAL HOSPITAL
CapL William Ancrom. USN, who
baa been a patient at the Naval
hospital in Charteaton since Jan
uary 24, was flown from Charles
ton recently to the Navay hospital
at Betbeada, Md., in the suburbs of
Washington for further treatment.
There has been no improvement of
his condition since he entered the
hospital nearly three months ago.
Almost air-tight construction of the garage buildmg
prevented what might have been a costly fire at the Stog-
ner Motor Company, 128 East DeKalb street at 6:30
o’clock Wednesday morning.
An automobile that was in the shop for repair work
was almost’completely destroyed, a car, that with several
others were in the place, was badly blistered and the ceil
ing of the service department was blistered by intense heat
The fire was discovered by S'
passerby who noted thst the show
room of the attractive garage was
filled with smoke. He turned in an
alarm to the fire department.
Firemen declared that the gar
age was so weU constructed that
no smoko could bo soon coming
from the series of closed doors on
the east side of the bnilding. When
the doors were opened, heavy
smoko from Maslng tiros, npholster-
ing, stc« in the burning car poured
out The firwnen aztlnguiahed the
fire without difficnlty and pushed
the car from the garage.
Damage to the garage was in. the
blistered osUlng and from sewty
8nK>ko that penetrated to every sec
tion.
Firemen declare that' had the
buUding not been tight, that the
burning car would have biased up
and communicated the flames to
other cars and the bnilding Itself,
causing what might have been a
most disastrous conflagratloD.
SOME FACTS ABOUT CAMDEN
COMMUNITY CONCERT ASS’N.
In connection with the_ drive being conducted this
week for members of the Camden Community Concert As
sociation, the following facts regarding the organization
will be of interest:
The associatmn is. organized, on a membership basis.
Each member pays annual dues entitling him or her to at
tend all of the conceria*p'ffe8ented by the association each
season without additional expense. * •
This”" membership is being secured during the cam
paign which is being conducted this week and which will
close on Saturday, night. At the end of this campaign the
membership list will be closed and no one may join for
another year. ^
Only members of the association may attend the con
certs. There are no single admissions sold f^r any concerts
or attractions under this plan, for concerts presented on
the basis of ticket-selling and single admissions plways
have meant and always will mean nnancial risk.
The success of the Camden Community Concert As
sociation is assured by the fact that enough memberships
must be secured during the membership campaign week
to make possible a minimum of three major concerts, or
the association will not function.
Every dollar paid into the association is spent for
artists and attractions and the attending local expenses
incident to their presentation in concert , •
Artists are selected by the local committee at the close
of the membership drive week.. The selection of a series
varies according to the amount'of money available from
membenhip dues.
Btcel makers use about 14 pounSa
of man|nuieae (or the manufacture
of eiseh ton of steel.
