ProCessfcxuUI Uunderert, who
usually classify stains into some GO
types labeled "airplane^ dope’* to
"verdigris," with s n^xwial/ treat
ment for each, approve pre-launder
ing treatment of stains. Most stains
react favorably to a plain soap and
water treatment, if the treatment
is applied soon enough, says the
American Institute of Laundering.
A simple procedure is to place the
stained area of the cloth under nm-
ning water, preferably lukewarm,
directing the water forcibly upon the
stained portion. This will, in most
cases, serve to remove the stain.
When stains cannot be removed by
soap and water, use dt the various
hou^old stain-remoyal. products
calls for ipecikl precautions. Laun
dry operators have long appreciated
the importance of good li^t in stain
removal work. They locate their
stain removal equipment in the
best-lighted sections of their plants.
Care should also be taken that
flames are absent when Inflam
mable solvents are being used.

Gravy Halus
Ifajof tide for removing any stain
is to start while it is fresh—before
it dries if possible — but that
doesn’t mean hurrying to the waML
, tub as quickly as possible. For
successful stain removal, your table
lioeas should be "spotted” before
tubblof. Sponge gravy atalna with
cold et lukewarm water. (Hot water
sets Ite stain.) The best “spoofe”
is one made of a soft, damp cloth,
covered with a layer of dry cloth.
Brush li^tly on the wrong side of
the tablecloth or napkin, woridng
from the outside of the stain to the
center. Spots are always sponged
from toe underneath side so that
toe foreign material will not have
to pau through the fabric. Any
greaae spot which remains will
probably come' out when toe cloth*
is washed in warm, soapy water. If
it resists washing, sponge it with
carb<m tetrachloride or some other
grease solvent
