The Orangeburg team of the Pal-' metto baseball league began prao tice Monday, and listed as candi dates for the team are two former Camden players, DeLury and La ment. . ' Ihe Orangeburg- Times and Democrat last Saturday nrried the following story; ' “Over 17.200 was reported col lected into the treasury of the Orangeburg baseball club at a meeting of the directors last night in the Kingan canteen. “A gigantic promotion program was ordered by the president^ of the club in preparation for the coming season and plans call for a radio program and posted sched ules to boost the team. The time for the program will be announced within s week. “Paul Dean, business manager of the team, gave a full report or. the members of the squad and their previous status in baseball. Some put of state players, mostly pitchers, were put on the prospect list and Mr. Dean will contact them immediately. Mr. Dean also made the announcement that the team will begin practice on Mon day at 4 p. m. Practice sessions will be held at the fair grounds un til- Mirmow field is ready for use. In connection with his re^rt, Mr. Dean asked that more names be submitted by the fans tw a name for the team. A large supply of equip ment has been bought by the club and they will be one of the best equipped teams in the circuit. “An aspiring Orangeburg baseball players were urged by Manager Kohonen and Panl Dean to be pres ent at the fair ground field on Monday for tryouts with the team. Stokes at the first jump in the Carolina Cup race here March 27. won the Deep Run Hunt cap, at Richmond, ya., on April 3. The race was a terrific three-mile race over post and rail and the Camden-trained horse made it in the fast time of 6:21:1. In winning he captured a leg on the cup presented by Mrs. Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Another Camden-trained horse, Roxspur. owned by Miss Laura Franklin of Monkton. Md., closed fast in the Deep Run race to take second place a nose ahead of Grand Illusion, entry of the Holliday Hill farm of this city and also a Cam den-trained horse. Grand Illusion, U will bo recalled, finished second in the Carolina Cup race* being hosed out by Big Mike in one of the most sensational finishes ever witnessed in the Springdale course. Roxspur raced in the Springdale meeting here on March 18. The worth of South Carolina a.s a training area for the race horses was further dhmonstrated at New York last week when two South Carolina-trained horses took first and second places in the Paumonok 130,000 event, the first big stake raceOof the season.
