A new lead to the problem of men*
tal disease comes as the reeutt of
comparative studlee of the behavior
of the adrenal glandi imdar cdodi-
dltlon stress in normal persons
isnd of individusls suflerlnf from
mental illness. The adrenal glands
are tiny organs diapsd like a
cocked baL above each kidney. They
secrete two typos of hormones. One,
known ss admnalln, or epinej^irlne.
Is produced by their cores, or Inner
parts. The other, named cortln. is
secreted by their outer akin, or eor-
tax.
The regulator of energy in the body
Is the thyroid gland, situated in ttie
neck. The adrenal glands serve ss
auxiliary “motors” In time of stress.
When danger confronts man or ani*
mal the adrenal glands go automaL'^
ically into action, by pouring extra'
adrenalin into the blood stream.
The biologists studied both nor*
mal and mentally ill persons under
conditions of controlled stress by
making their subjects operate a pur
suit meter under simulated condi
tions of high-altitude flying. The
amount of stress this operation in
volves has been described by Army
pilots as being eqUaL in tiring ef-
fecL to close-formation flying under
^r weather conditions. The result
showed a diflerence in response by
the adrenal glands ‘ of the normal,
aa compared with the mentally ab-,
normal subjects. Strangely enough,
it was not the adrenalin-secreting
part of the gland that showed the
difference in response, but the cor
tex of the gland, producing the cor-
tin, which is not under the C(Hitrol
at the nervous system.

A summary of 23f farm family
accounts studied by University of
Illinois economists showed wide
disnges in the amount and distribu
tion of family expenditures and sav
ings from the first year of mar
riage to the 35th wedding anniver
sary and beyond.
Ordinarily the gmatast savings
ara made after tha diildren are
**(01 their own,” but in IMS, when
income was high and many b^a
ware in service, the largest savings
were made by the group married
SO to 24 years. Some of the year’s
funds which would have been spent
for college education went into
savings for future use.’
Uvlng axpendituTM were hip
est for the group married 25 to 2F
years, mainly because of hi^ med
ical expense and Urge wadding or
other gifU to children. The lowest
amount of money used tor living
eras in families married SS years
and over. The group marrifd 20
to 24 years carried the peak load
tor operating, clothing, personal
and recreation — expenditures
which were related directly to the
needs of the family.

aty ef MMae-Aged
Chicago has become Uie h(»ne of
the middle aged, acoiMing to a re
port by the Advisory Committee of
Chlcego-Cook Comty Health ^-
vey. Chicago has fewer individuals
under Hf years at age than does the
United States, but also has proper-
ttonately few individttals over M
years of age,” the report points out
The proportion of individuels be
tween 35 and 54 years of sge in
Chicago is greater Uian faa the wh(de
United States. There hat been dur
ing the past 20 years a downward
trend in both the birtti rate end the
death rate In Chicago, and these are
important factors reducing the per
centage of population under 20 yeara
of age. Another factor changing the
age distribution is immigration,
which initially brought large num
bers of persons in the rhiM-haget-
ting age group to the United States,
but now has ^minished to the point
of being of no importance, the report
said.
