Earl Shannon Is
Basketball Star
Earl Shannon, who is married to
the former Miss Dally Jackspn of
Camden, won basketball fame in a
Providence-St. Louis basketball
game on March 9, when he' made
a successful shot of almost 62 feet
for a basket.
The following story Is from the
Pawtucket (Rhode Island) Times
and is of interest here:
‘‘Earl Shannon ‘tossed’ his name
across the country through the var
ious news services as he all but
heaved his right arm out on to
North Main street in making a suc
cessful 61 3-4 foot shot In the'Provi-
dence-St. Louis basketball game at
Providence, R. I., March 9.
“About three seconds remained
when Providence took the ball out
of bounds, Shannon took the pass
In from out of bounds readied the
ball like a center fielder about to
throw to the plate, and then let fly
with a one-hand rlfle-llkfe shot that
went into the hoop without ever
touching the backboard as the buz
zer ended festivities. The ball went
screaming into the net and almost
tore It off the rim.
‘‘The shot measured with a tape
during the intermission, travelled
exactly 61 3-4 feet and was easily ‘
one of the longest in the history of 1
modern basketball annals. It sur-j
passed by three and 3-4 feet thOj
long shot by Ernie Calverley In the
National Invitation Tourney at
Madison Square Garden against
Bowling Green. It was of this shot
and the shot of last night that the
crowd talked In the lobbies and ini
the stands. |
‘‘Earl Shannon Is married to the
former Dally Jackson, daughter of
Mrs. W. L. Stokes, Sr., of Camden,
S. C."
OFFICERS GET STILL

day road gang sentence from Mag
istrate Jack David when arraigned
in court last Wednesday. Deas was

and Williams after they had raided
his home in the Boykin section and
found a 40-gailon still.
