The Camp and Hospital Service
waa organized at the outbreak of
the war for the entertainment and
improvement of morale of the able
bodied and convalescent soldiers
in camps. Our local committee was
one of 14 from aa many epunties
when thwe wore 40,000' men at
Fort Jackson and always 1,600 in
its General hospital.
With the closing of the war the
Richland county chapter, American
Red Cross, as being close to Fort
Jackso^ and the Columbia Vet-
erazu hospital, was given the lead
ing part for entertainment of the
men at* both hospitals.
Calls on our local chapter for
participation in entertainment
such as Christmas and on other oc
casions decreased notably during
1947.
At request and with the very
effeclent assisUince of Mrs. John
Wall, chairman of Volunteer Spec
ial Services, and members of the
Canteen and Motor Corps, our com
