Makes Plea For
Teen-^e Canteen
The Chronicle Is In receipt of
the following communication:
To the Citisens of Camden:
I am Juat a teen-agar of Camden
but I want you to liateo to what
I have to say because it concerns
each and every one of you. An
old saying goes “The hope and fu
ture of a nation lies in its young
people." The futum of Camden lies
in the teen-agem, the adolescents,
the childmn of today. The kids
that are studying Lbtin today will
be passing laws, running the
churches, sitting in thie> senate, and
governing the state and nation in a
jfew years. Whether we will be jail-
I birds and drunkards or good solid
citisens is being decided now. Now
is the time that the future of Cam
den and South Carolina is being
determined.
And here is where the teen-age
canteen comes into the picture.
First of «II. do you know what the
canteen is?? It is a place whem a
kid can go,to have good clean fun.
It is a place where he esn go meet
his friends, talk, sing, play ping-
pong, read, laugh, or Just let off
steam. It is a place where them is
no drinking, gambling, cursing, or
rude behavior allowed. It is a
place where companionship anjl
good cheer thrive in a good clean,

I* tWhy not buy now and store in your locker those
ineats which you know are going to scarce and high-,
priced during the Spring and Summer? *•
• All authorities agree that there will be^ a shortage
of meats.
• The production of meat has not kept pace with the
demand ~ JUST AS IN THE CASE OF FUEL OIL —
and there is sure to be a shortage this summer.
•The national shortage of rneat is now estimated at
29 per cent.

The canteen now haa ninety ac
tive, entbualaatlc, young membere
between the agea of IS and 19.
Each week brings new membere
and the added problem of apace.
I only wish that each of you
could see the canteen in operation
—the good times, the laughing, the
enthusiasm and the pressing need
for niom space.
The small one room canteen that
we now have la d^nltely not suf
ficient. We need a place three or
four times that large. It is impos
sible for us alone to remedy this
and 80 we am calling on yon to
help na. We, the youth of Ciunden,
am asking you to give us a place
to go where them is no drinking
or gambling. We are asking you to
give us a chance to be something
besides Juvenile delinquents.
And you should g^ on yonr
knees and thank ,God that we are
asking for this chance. Then get
up from your knees and do some
thing!
Respectfully,
MARTHA ARRANTS.
