The report made by Sheriff Gib
DeBnihl to the county grand Jury
this week rereals that the county's
law enforcement officers have
been very busy during the paat
three months.
'The report revealed that 12.063
had been collected In fines, six
stills destroyed and 1,020 gallons
of mash destroyed.
Arrests made were driving un
der Influence of alcohol, 5; mur
der, 1; attempted robbery, 1; ar
son, 1: drunk and disorderly, 23;
cont^aled weapon. 1; " operating^
piccolo illegally, 2; reckless driv
ing, 1; possession unstamped
whiskey, 1; operating gambling
house, 1; gambling. 4; escaped
girls from industrial school. 2;
housebreaking and grand larceny,
1; drunks, 68, and investigation, 9.

of the City of Camden be opened
by the Supervisor of Registration,
in the office^ of the City Clerk.

remain open each day thereof

That a special general election
In the City of Camden shall be
held on the 13th day of April, 1948,
to vote on the following question;
•Shall the City of Camden adopt

Says Alcoholics
Anonymous Doing
Very Great Work ,
A representative of Alcoholics
Anonymous who was gueat speak
er at the dinner meeting of the
Camden Lions Club list Thursday
explained the methods pursued by
that organization to the club.
Alcoholism, be said, is a disease
and that it should not bo punished
by prison sentences. He said that
doctors agree that an alcoholic is
a sick person.
There are 50,000,000 people in the
United States who drink, he said,
and of these 3,000,000 drink to ex
cess and 1,000,000 of thMu are
chronicle alcoholics. One out of
every six drunkards is a woman.
^“I am a drunkard and but for the
grace of God and the help of Al
coholics Anonymous I wouldn't be
here,” said the speaker who said
that It has now been four years
since be had touched a drop of
whiskey.
The speaker said that Alcoholics
Anonymous would not accept as
a member any man didn't believe
in God and who didn't have a sin
cere desire to quit drinking. He
said the organization w«a com
posed only of alcoholics. They meet
and try to help each other to over
come the weakness. There are no
outside members.
When a person Joins he is given

chip. If he keeps this chip unbrok
en for three months he is given
e red chip which he is to keep for
six months and if he keeps It un
broken then he is given a blue chip
which he keeps permanently or un

Deaths
MRS. MAMIE ANDERSON
Mrs. Mamie Anderson, 74, died
at her realdence here February 8
at 8:30 a. m., after an extended
Illness. She was the widow of the
late R. T. Anderson. She wad bom
in Darlington county, the daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moees
McCoy.
Funeral services were held from
the Beaver Dam Baptist church
Febraary 9 at 4 p. m.. Rev. Mr.
King officiating. Interment was In
the family plot.
She Is survived by six sons,
Elaraest, Archie. Ed and Everett
Anderson of Cassatt, Lee Anderson
of Camden, Ted Anderson of Wax-
haw; a daughter, Mrs. Jack Rob
erts of Camden; a brother, Ekigene
Bacot of Camden, and two sisters,
Mrs. Rosa Brooks of Atlanta, Ga.,
and Mrs. Daisy Pague of Attleboro,
Mass.
SAM J. LIVINGSTON
Sam J. Livingston, 74. died at
the Camden hospital February 11
at 6 a. m., after an illness of sev
eral days. He was born in Rich
land county and had farmed in the
Buffalo community of Kershaw
county moat of hla life.
Funeral services were held from
the Buffalo Baptist church Feb
ruary 12 at 2 p. m.. Rev. Mr. Outln
officiating.
He Is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Flora Llvlngton, Bethune;^one
son. Dewey Livingston; Bethline,
and onb daughter, Mrs. Buralce
Moseley, Lancaster.

Team To .Play In
Sumter Tourney
Eight teams have entered the
class AA Invitational basketball
tournament to be held at Sumter,
February 26, 27 and 28. 'This annoal
meet determines the champion in
boys’ basketball of South Carolina’s
bigger high schools.
Greenville’s Red Raiders will
not appear to defend their state
title; however. Biahop Ehigland of
Charleston, breher of' Columbia,
Spartanburg, and Sumger, along
with Florence, Camden, Conway
and reenwood, promise an exciting
display of good baaketball to fans
in this area. Bishop England was
mnner-up last year.
'The winning team will be pre
sented a trophy with other awards
going to individual honor winners.
This year's tonmament Is the
fourth playing oC the event In Sum-
tor.

Walter H. Wooten' died- on Feb
ruary 9 at the Camden hospital
after an illness of three and a half
years. He was a retired farmer and
had lived in the Cassatt seetton
all of his life.
He was burled at Sandy Grove
Methodist church Wednesday, Feb
ruary 11. The funeral was conduct
ed by Rev. Paul Webb of Camden.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Viola
Harden Wooten;, a son, Lucas V.
Wooten of Bolling Field, Washing
ton; one daughter, Mrs. Jake Cope
land; a granddaughter. Dot Ray;
two brothers, William Wooten of
Blaney and Adam Wooten of Co
lumbia. and several nieces and
nephews.

Camden Retires
From Palmetto
Baseball League
ramdt n has withdrawn from the
Palmetto baseball league.
At a meeting of the directors of
the league held in Blshopvllle on
Sunday, it was decided to stand
by the regulations imposed by the
league by-laws relating to a 25-mile
player radius.
Because of 'the fact that it would
be Impossible for this city to field
any sort of a team within Its own
25-miIe radius, the supporters of
the local team decided to withdraw
from the league.
Representing Camden at the
meeting were Harold McNinch, J.
C. Walton, Georgo Wilson and Jack
Nettles.
