WE ARE FOR THIS BAN
Several bills will be submitted at the next session
of Congress calling for curbing the movement in inter
state commerce of newspapers, periodicals and radio
programs containing much of the current advertising
for alcoholic beverages. Each would amend the fed
eral trade .commission to classify as **misleadting*’ any
ad linking liquor with “men of distinction”, the tra
dition of the American family or physical upbuilding.
The proposals were offered by Senator Clyde
Reed, R., of Kansas and Senator Eld win C. Johnson,
D., Colo., who had been appodnted to consider an anti
liquor ad bill sponsored for more than a decade by
Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas.
One of the committee’s proposals offered as a
substitute for the original clapper bill, outlaws any
liquor ad including the likeness of a woman, child or
caricature of a woman, child or family scene, of any
person serving or preparing drinks or holding a bot
tle, glass or container in a manner indicating the con
sumption of liquor. It also prohibits any illustration
primarily appealing to children, such as comic strip.**
or children’s peth, depicting athletes or athletic
events, referring to any religious holiday or festival,
or making use of any symbol, sign or other character
associated with such festivals.
Capper hearings last spring had uncovered an
extensive campaign by liquor interests, especially
through periodicals using color in thedr advertising
ptqiE’es to convey to youth the idea that the consump
tion of liquor is “smart.”
A TRAGIC ACCIDENT
Tragedy has struck another in the circle of week
ly newsp^ers in this section. Jake Brown, brother of^
DaCosta Brown, owner and publisher of the Camden
Chronicle, and his eight-year-old son, are dead from
injuries sustained in an autombile Sunday, August
17- Mr. Brown worked with his brother on The
Chronicle, and was, at 29 years of age, only in the
beginning of his adult life. We 6ffer our sincere
sympathies to Mrs. Brown, who is suffering also from
injuries, as well as to other members of his family,
including his mother, surviving children and brothers
and sisters.—Pageland Journal.

contests and fortune telling. After
the gifts were opened, the girls
and boys went on the terrace where
a lace-cover^ table was centered
with a white birthday cake deco
rated with blue candles. Sand
wiches, drinks, ice cream, angel
food cake and candy mints were
served to Jane Cooper, Della Wan
da Redfern, Camille Fcrte, Martha
Crawford, Sandra Nolan, Jana Lou
Ewing, Lee Clyburn, John Haglns,
Walter Smith, John Stover. Bobble
Meyer and Larry Smith.

Little Allen Nelson. Jr„ had 25
of his little friends in to help him
celebrate his fourth birthday last
Friday afternoon. 'The dining room
decorations carried out the color
scheme with the cake. Ice cream
and fancy cookies in pink and
white. Several of the mothers were
present to heli) with the entertain
ment. After refeshments they all
gathered in the living room to ad-
ipire the many gifts he received.
