Joej Blalock's grand slam homer
d inning of the Saturday
with BUhopville at
sent the Chiefs out in
e Bishops by a 4 to 0
which with another tally
In the fourth, gave them a
ecision and enabled them
to retain the same margin of lead
in the.race for the Palmetto league
gonfalon.
It also represented a clean sweep
of all games played against the^
Blshopville team this season.
Leary started the game tor Cam
den and worked five Innings giv
ing up three hits. Lasorda flniahed
the game to conserve Leary's sore
wing. He gave up but one hit In
the balance of the pastime. 'The
Chiefs connected for six hits off
Boyd Stokee, the vlsttlng mounds
man. Leary and Leeorda piled «g)

Tommie Lasorda pitched one-hit
ball to give his mates an 8 to 1
decision oyer the Sonocos of Harts-
ville at the Legion park last 'Thurs
day night. The Quaker state young
ster would have had shutout to his
credit but for a temporary control
lapse in the seventh when he forced
in a run by walking a, Hartsvllle
batter with the sacks loaded. Out
side of that one frame, the visl-
lors saw first base but twice.
The game was high-lighted by
the hitting, base running and sen-
eatlonal fielding of Hugh Cox, Cam
den left fielder. Cox got two hits,
stole three bases and made some
of the most sensational catches
seen in the Camden outfield this
season. He took Register's clout
off the left field wall In the seventh
with a bore hand leaping stab.
' Lefty Leonard, sensational
Hartsvllle southpaw, gave up 11
hits, three being doubles, two by
Mims and the other by Stone. Stone
also listed two singles.
Camden scored a run in the sec
ond, five In the third and two In
the eighth. Lasorda fanned ten and
Leonard seven. Elach hurler issued
four walks.
The line score;

Coach Ltodsay Pierce and hts
gang of Bulldoga are enjoying life
up at Camp Carlyle near Hender
sonville. Word comee frmn the
camp that Oeorge (Adonis) Beleos
almost caused a riot when he ap
peared on the streets of Henderson
ville. Seems that all the gals fall
for sturdy George.
Coach Skimp Harrison started his
Hartsvllle high gridders at work
Thursday of this week. Several of
the 1946 varsity are hack and the
newcomers on the squad look
mighty good. The Hartsvllle Highs
are expected to make a fine show
ing this year.
Coach Weldon of Sumter has a
big squad to cheese from this year
and i^icatlons are that the Game-
corks will he a serious threat to
any squad having title aspirations.
Up at CHiester tbs town is again
football crasy and with a majority
of the Big boys of '46 back on
the job. the Chester Highs are
definitely in line for state title
aspiratldhs.
West Columbia, or as we know
the team here, Brookland-Cayce,
will not be as strong as last jrear,
but new timber is expected to
make up for the loss of several of
the ’46 regulars.
Rock Hill, 1946 champs, lost
quite a few of the first string tal
ent of last year, but the Hill team
will make ibe best to the stale
travel te take top honors.

RAIN HALTS, FLORENCE GAME
And the rain came—And How.
And It robbed well over 2.(k)0
wild-eyed baseball fans assembled
in the Legion stadium last Friday
night of a splendid evening of base
ball entertainment
Every seat in the bleachers and
grandstand was taken and ntMy
hundreds e'ltber stood up or sat' on
the ground along the right field
boundery line. The Hartsvllle ball
club, accompanied by scorm of
Hartsvllle fans, temmed a section
of the grandstand Fully a hundred
Columbia fans had motored over
to witness the cmcial lilt Sumter
was also well represented. Florence
sent over a big delegation.
The second inning of the game
had just gotten underway when the
rain began, to fall. 'The exodus of
fans started when the rain began
to fall to heavy drops. Soon the
bleachers were empty and thousand
and more fans ' were rushing to
cars for shelter. In order to avoid
having any of the high-powered
light bulbs in the lighting system
ruined by breakage, the lights were
turned off. Emergency lights were
turned on in the grandstand.
Eddie Leary was on the mound
for Camden and retired the visitors
to order the first toning. Camden
