Rodent was beaten to death near the old ticket booth at the Zemp football field last Thursday afternoon, after he had been dis covered hiding in the structure by a crew of laborers who are en gaged in preparing the area for a new concrete block fence. Rodent made an effort to e^ape the mob violence, but he was out numbered and when he collapsed, he could not avoid the blows that were leveled at him. The police department did 'not know of the killing until ihformed by a Chronicle reporter, who hap pened to drive up Just as Rodent was breathing his last. Sheriff Gib DeBruht likewise was tmawarnyf the killing. He declared however that he was certain that there would not be any inquest. Furman Williams, in charge of 'the construction work at the foot ball field described the killing as being without premeditation. “We were removing the old tick et booth and had ^tipped it 'over when we saw Rodent,” be said. ;*He came at me and I side stepped, grabbed up a piece of timber and let him have it. He was stunned by the blow and several of my men finished him with a series of blows.” Anyhow, Rpdent was a mouse, who bad been making his home under the floor of tbe booth and resented being disturbed. His presence there was not half as much of a hazard as were the ten black widow spiders that killed that same afternoon. "They are really dangerous,” said Williams. ‘T had one bite me sev eral years ago and if I had not acted immediately to draw out the poison and hurry to the hospital I would have been a gone goose. Kershaw Students Listed In Winthrop Distinguished List Rock Hill — Distinguished Stu dents at Winthrop for the semester ending June 1 were announced to day at the South Carolina College fof Women. The names of 114 students, 104 of them South Carolina ghrls, were listed by college officials for main taining high scholastic averages. President Henry R. Sims, in per sonal letters, commended each stu dent for her exceptional achieve ment Included among the distinguish ed were Margaret Carolyn Pitts of Camden and Augusta Inez Hyatt of Cassatt. Miss Pitts, who was grad uated in June, was-listed also on the first semester distinguished list. Miss Hyatt, a sophomore stu dent, has been distinguished fot two previous semesters. FareweO Event For The Pastor Of Blaney (%urch The PHTS of Blaney P. H. church will present an outstanding program August 17 at 8 p. m., dedi cated to the pastor. Rev, and Mrs.^ J. W. Swalls, who will leave at the close of the conference year for their new home in Oklahoma, where he shall begin teaching in the Sherott Bible college, also con tinuing pastorate church work. For the past three years the church has been fortunate In hav ing Mr. Swalls as full-time pastor and some of the greatest aceoas- ptlShments have been during this time. Mrs. Swalls, the former Miss Glands Baldwin, teacher in the Lake City schools, has made many friends throughout this section, since coming hM’e one year ago.
