Wken tha Camden high school
football team trots oat on the tort
of the k)cal football stadium on the
night of September IS to gire
battle to a poweiiioase from Blsh-
ppTllle, that meted oat an onex*
pected defeat to thmn last year.
It will be sbmethlng of an snni-
Tersary affair—for it will mark the
SSrd birthday of the grid sport in
the Camden high school history.
For a fact—football was first
introduced to the fans here back
in 1894 and it wasn’t Just one
team, but two that performed be-
^fore the excited populace. One
was known‘as the Athenians and
the other the Spartans. That first
year of the sport, games were play*
ed between these two teams, and
thik rlralry, old timers, recollect,
ran high.
In 1896 the first intercity game
was plficed and the Gibbes Green
team of Columbia was the oppo
sition outfit History relates that
Camden was giren a crushing de
feat, but the boys got the exper*
ience that comp^ition glres and
they profited by it
This writer has always hoped
for a chance to sit down with Sam
DePass. school of Journalism head
at the state unlrersity, and chat
OTsr the football era of a half cen
tury back. For. Hr. DePass was a
member of that ea^ly day team,
and history records that he later
became a football star at the slate
unirendty. Then another old timer
that brought fame to Qamden was
Sid Smi^, who later went to Wof
ford whOTe he starred in baseball
and football. Incidentally Sid Smith
coached the first footMl team at
The Citadel and he also played
baseball in tho major leagues.
Other names that are recalled are
Charley Brown, Paul Villepigue,
who was a brother of John Villo
ptgue, who put Camden on the foot
ban map in later years. Edward

Many of the abore named liare
passed on. but those who are still
alire chmish the memories of the
old days and many of them make
it a point to gather at the stadium
to watch the present crop of grid
athletes perform.
Coach Lindsey Pierce, who will
again lead the Bulldogs as coach,
has 11 games already lined, up for
the coming season and he may
make it an eren dosen by schedul
ing a turkey day game for Norem-
ber 97, away from home. As the
schedule 'now stands Camden opens
with Bishopville on September 12,
and followed on the 19th with a
game here with Dreher high from
Columbia. Sumter will be host to
the Bulldogs on September 28. and
then fdllows two home' games, the
first with HartsTille on October S,
and the second with Florence on
October 10. On October 17 the team
rolls to Charleston, but returns on
October 24 to battle Chestw here.
Darlington plays here October 81.
Brookland-Cayce will be met at
West Columbia on Norembm* 7 and
on Norember 14 the team goes to
Lancaster. On Norember 21 Spar
tanburg plays here.
Pierce expects to take his entire
football squad to the North Caro
lina camp for a period of training
and recreation. This has been a cus
tom for some 3rears and it is not
expected there will be any change
this year.

Protest Is Made
The school trustees hare de-
lirered an ultimatum to the base
ball club anent the use of the foot
ball area for trucks carrying soft
drinks, etc., to the ball park, to
the effect that unless the trucks
refrain from trareling orer the
football playing field, that the area
will be barred to them.
Supt J. G. Richards stated that
he had made protest against the
trucks using the football field three
times and yet the practice con
tinues
The baseball field along the right
field line was cut up Sunday when
a group of negro ball players from
Shaw Field ran their jeep truck
orer the grass, cutting ruts in the
surfacs
It would appear that unless the
property can be respected, that all
trucks and automobiles should be
barred from the surface of the two
fields
