RU^IA 18 DANGEROUS
It is too bad that all America could not heat what
Roy LeCraw^former mayor of the cityVf Atlanta, Ga.,
had to tell the Rotary club at Sumter last weelc about
conditions in Europe. LeCraw presented a true and
realistic picture of conditions as they are today and
bluntly said that the United States is in greater peril
/ight now than just before the Jap sneak attack at
Pearl Harbor. That peril, he declare, is Russia, a
brutal. Godless and materialistic nation, a nation de*
termined to destroy democracy.
According to LeCraw, Russia wants American
friendship only as Iona as it will benefit her. He de
clared that the Soviets are far more deadly enemies to
us than either Germany or Japan ever was.
'.LeCraw is neither an alarmist or a war mongrel.'
He is a man who has been on the scene, knows the con
ditions ahd what may develop at this time. He de- ‘
mands that we be tough and strong in dealings with,
the Soviets, for this is the attributes that Russian men-'
tality respects. There must be constant alertness else
a Russian version of Pearl Harbor will be forthcoming
and it will be many times more tragic than was the
Jap attack.
SOUNDS AWFULLY FUNNY/ ^
That storming of the office of the state treasurer
and state comptroller by general assembly members
to get their **extra*' pay before it could be tied up by
a threatened injunction continues to be the theme of a
relentless barrage 9f editorial condemnation by the
press of the state.
There are so many angles to the unfortunate
mess that if it was not so serious, it would be laugh
able. For instance, what the*editors, and perhaps
many citizens of the state, would like to have ex
plained is how come the comptroller already had the
pay fixed for each member wnen they presented their
vouchers. A41 of the pMkages, it is claimed, contained
the same number oi bills of like denomination. The
banks in Columbia were closed, as it was Saturday,
Hay 10, Memorial Day. So the comptroller must have
had to have a tremendous number of bills on band
ana he must have gotten them befoK Saturday.
' What the editors would like to know is—fmr
what pun>08e di^ he get them. He must have had
some inside knowledge that the extra pay would be
assed, even if the governor vetoed it Or perhaps
e had inside dope that the governor would not veto it
It is claimed that never before has it been cus
tomary for the legislators to rush to the office of the
comptioller or treasurer to get their pay.
