Sumter sent a big crowd of fans
to witness the game. It was the
noisiest battle so far staged on
the Legion diamond—not by play
ers—^but by the fans.
The game was one of the best
offered on the Legion ball lot in
years. For eight rounds it was a
nip and tuck affair and for six
frames but one error, that by
Sumter, had been recorded.
The visitors argued long and loud
over Chandler's decision on Claf-
fey’s slide home In the fifth. From
the prpM box it looked aa if the
Sumter center fielder had tagged
the plate, but when Hunter put the
ball on him as he was getting up
and Chandler called him out. the
fireworks started.
The nmpiree had a buay evening

this
and for the first time this aeaaon
had to nee their eyee. Because ao
many of the dote decisions were
against the home team the crowd
roared Ita disapproval. But the two
arbiters were calling them aa they
