Mrs. Helen Van Zandt Knight,
formerly of Cool Springs planta
tion, has purchased the historic
McWillie home on Green street
from D. Z. Norton, who a year ago
acquired it from Southern Airways.
The latter air force organisation
had utilised the famous old dwel
ling as an instmetora club during
the war.
The dwrtlittg, standing on a high
eminence of Kirkwood H^hts was

lie and was known as Bunby Ter
race. William McWillie was bora
near Liberty Hill, November 17.
17H. He received his education in
the school near there and during
the war of 1812 be volunteered for
service and became an adjutant In
1818 he was married to a daughter
of Joseph Cunningham of Liberty
Hill. 1838 he became president of
the Bank of Camden, then located
at the northwest corner of Rutledge
and Broad stre^ where the Blchel
store is now located. He was elect
ed to the state senate in 1844 and
it was during his period in the sen
ate that he was active in getting
the Camden branch of the South
Carolina railroad built.
On October 1, 184S, he moved to
Mississippi where he located and
later became governor of that state.
His home in Madison county was
named ^Kirkwood. He died in 1889
at thp age of 74 years.
The dwelling on Gunhy Terrace

Bronx Bus Passes
Through Camden;
Driver Arrested
If any Camden citizens, or even
Camden police officers, noticed the
big orange colored bus with the
New York trsnstl line designation
rolling through Camden last Satur
day, they -probably Just thought it
a rather mstropolltan . looking
equipage and a long long way from
home.
Some might have wondered why
this 44-seat city ■ transit bus was
empty save fof the driver.
The rea8on--.lt was a stolen ve
hicle. The drivM- of the affair was
identified by Hollywood, Fla., police
as William Lawrence Similo of 824
East 22nd street, the Bronx, New
York.
Similo, who admitted that he was
a driver for the Bronx bus system
and had started out on a usual pas
senger run Friday morning. He
took the wrong tarn in the highway
however and rolled out of New
York on Highway No. 1, heading tor
Florida,
That night Similo stopped at a
tourist court in Virginia and on
Saturday he was rolling out on No.
1 again. He passed through Cam
den late in the afternoon and rolled
the parade of cars going south
from the Carolina Cap races.
Saturday night he stopped *at a
niace in Georgs and the next day,
Sunday, he was in Florida. He was
taken Into custody -at the Gulf-|
stream park where he had gone tO|
se© if he couldn’t pick up some'
money on wagering on the races.
