RADICALLY WRONG
The Sumter Item, under the captain “College Flunk
Outs" has so'me pertinent facts to disclose, chief among
them being statistics as to the flunkouts among students
at Carolina, Clemson, Winthrop and The Citadel.
The Item says that while numbers are not stated,
that between seven and eight hundred were flunked out
at the state university, following examinations at the end
of the first semester. At Clemsoh the number is reported
as being near to a thousand, while at Winthrop and The
Citadel the number ran heavy.
As the Item so frankly puts it “This high mortality
rate of college students appears to substantiate the
charge that something is radically wrong with the re
quirements for college mati^bulation."
“What a waste of dormitory and class room space,"
continues the Item, “to drag these hundreds of unpre
pared matriculants through the first semester and then
flunk them out. A rigid entrance examination ought to
reveal the unpreparedness for college work. Such a weed
ing out would save time and expense of the students and
save congestion in the colleges."
SPEEDY JUSTICE
The rapidity with which the Greenville and Pickens
county authorities brought to justice the members of the
mob that lynched a negro after taking him from the
Pickens county jail should draw the plaudits of those who
have confidence in the law enforcement agencies of our
state. While as yet the law has not definitely fastened
upon the member of the mob who fired the shot that
killed the negro, a big majority of the 85 men who were
in the grouii have been placed under arrest. It is heart
ening to know that as a matter of law every member of
the mob is equally as guilty as the man who fired the
fatal shot. \
Our congratulations to the officers who did such a
speedy efficient job in clearing up this heinous crime.
THE HOLE IN THE DOUGHNUT
We frankly admit we are not an inventive expert,
but We* do often wonder if the fellow who conceived
the idea of putting a doughnut around the hole isn’t
entitled to just as much credit as the fellow who
thought up the idea of putting the hole in the dough
nut.

fashioned barn dance to raise funds
for the “Junior-Senior.”

South Carolina regional office of
the Veterans Administration, re
ported today.
A new law passed this week by
congress and signed today by the
president gives the administrator
of veterans affairs authority to de
termine the conditione of reinstate
ment_ on .NSLJ.
Mr. Turner said that word was
received tdday by John M. Slaton,
Jr., deputy administrator of the VA
in the southeastern area, from
Oen. Omar Bradley, VA admlnistra
tor, that under his new authority
Bradley was directed that NSIJ
term policies which bare lapsed at
any time may be reinstated by pay
ment of two monthly preminnu and
a comparative health statement.
Veterans seeking to reinstate un
der this provision simply siipu a
Btatdinent that they are in as good
health as at the time their policies
lapsed.
The new liberal reinstatement
privilege will remain in effect un
til August 1. PreviOnsly, a* dead
line of February 1, 1947, had been
set for reinstatements on a com
parative health basis.
Under the new law, a veteran
may also obtain any of the per
manent NSLI plans from the VA
without the necessity of previously
holding the term plan. Under the
old law, VA was required to issue
new policies of NSLI on a term
plan only, and it had to be carried
on that basis for one year before
it could be converted to a per
manent plan.
