BISHOPVILLE EXPERIMENT
lishopville a large group of citizens have
11 by the horns and are drafting seven
Veterans of the world war, to be candi-
^tion for mayor and councilmen.
A Bishopville paper last week carried a large ad
vertisement headed, “Veterans! We Again Ask Your
Help.”
Then the story goes on to explain that the citizens
request the young men named to offer themselves as
candidates. The young men are selected because they
belong to no special group'Or faction, and would—if
elected—enter office owing no person or persons any
political obligation. "'I
The citizens state that they want an administra
tion that will publish quarterly reports of the finan
cial condition of the town, salaries paid to town em
ployees, fines collected, delinquent taxes, parking
meter income, install additional pumps for ample
water supply, extend sewage facilities and* pave
streets.
It’s an interesting experiment and if t>ie old adage
that “youth must be served" is true, some other towns
might follow the Bishopville pattern.
THE OLD REFRAIN
The press of the nation has given a lot of space
on Leo Durocher of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Miss
Larraine Day of the movies, whose marraige will not
be recognized as legal by the California courts until
one year has elapsed. The sob-sister stuff of the press
has served to occasion a wide wave of maudlin sym
pathy for the baseball player and the movie maiden.
We knonv that the ruling of the California judge that
Mr. Durocher and Miss Day must wait a year sounds
a familiar refrain to Mr. Durocher. His hopes of an
early marriage are so like the hopes of his ball club
back in Brooklyn. We can imagine that Leo must have
fancied ihimself back at EbbeU field where the rally
ing cry of the never-say-dic followers of Dose Bums
is "Wait until next year.”
