varsjty baseball team, and was a
backfield star on the varsity loot'
ball squad.
The services which won ;fpr Col
onel Metis the Legion of Merit
award, are the highlight of an ex
tensive military career, spanning
two world wars, which commenced
In 1916 when Colonel Metis volun
teered as a private in Troop A,
South Carolina National Ouard.
He served with this unit on the
Mexican border. Upon return from
this duty he attended the Second
Officer's Training camp at Fort
Oglethorpe, Oa. He was appointed
a captain in the Field Artillery
upon graduating from Officers
school, and became a Battery com
mander in the 82nd Division, which
served in France during the First
World War. Colonel Metts wears
three battle stars as a result of
bis services In the war.
After the armistice, Colonel Metts
served in the Army of Occunatlon
and upon his return to the states he
attended the basic field artillery
school, Fort Knox. Ky. He Is a
graduate of the Field Artillery
school, Fort Sill, Okla., and the Ad
vanced Horsemanship school. Fort
Sill
Colonel Metts served in the
Philippines from 1934 to 1937.
Early in 1944 Colonel Metts wont
to the European theater of opera
tions as commanding officer of the
79lh Field Artillery group with
which he served in Normandy,
France, Belgium, Holland and Ger
many. During the battle of the
Bulge, Colonel Metts was trans
ferred from commanding officer of
the 79th Field Artillery group to
commanding officer of Artillery
Brigade of the First Army, serving
with this unit until the end of
hostilities. He was then transferred
to become the commanding officer
of the XXI Corps Artillery with
which he moved from Germany to
Austria, serving for several months
in our occupation forces in that
country.
Colonel Metts arrived at Fort
Jackson on 18 October 1946, at
which time he was assigned as as
sistant to the deputy post com
mander. A month later he assumed
the duties of deputy post command
er and at the present time. Colonel
Metts Is assistant to the executive
officer of headquarters, Replace
ment Training Center, Fort Jack
son.
