Willium Waafaamaker Bates. 92,
prominent civic leader and insur
ance man of ikty died in the
Jefferson hospital* at Philadelphia
following an operation for brain
tumor.
A native of Orangeburg, Mr.
Bates moved to this community In
1927 when he^ became managM' of
the Cedars and Pines, the tamoua
Clark Williams plantation near
here. He remained in that capacity
for 19 years when he purchased
the attractive estate of‘1902 l.yttle-
ton street to this city four 'years
ago. He has since engaged in the
Inanrance business hmw.
Mr. Bates was a member of the
local Shrine and Masonic groups
and hu been prominent la Rotary
club affairs for some time. Re-
llgloasly he was a Methodist
Mr. Bates will always be remem
bered for his engaging personality
and hto . Innate courtesy. He was
a quiet kindly character and pur
sued hto proleesion with dignity.
He wrlll be greatly missed by his
many and devoted friends.
He was the son of the late Frank
D. Bates and Mary Wannamaker.'
He to survived by hto widow, the
former Ethel Smith, daughter of
the late Judge Meddel L. Smith of
Cakden; a son. William W. Bates,
Jr., student at Duke university; two
brothers, W. T. C. Bates of Orange
burg and F. D. Bates of Maryland;
four alstars. Miss Florence Bate# of
Orangebnrg, Mrs. Macbeth Wagnon
of Union, Mrs. James M..Brailsford
of Orangeburg and Mra. Frank
Brotherton of Jasper. Ala., and his
stepmother, Mrs..Frank D. Batas.
The body arrlv^ In Camden Sun
day and was taken to the Komegay
Funeral home. Funeral was held
Monday afternoon at 2:20 at the
Methodist church, the Rev. George

officiating. Interment was in Quak
