DECEMBER 27. 1946 A WISH FOR NEW TEAR We, the people of So^h Carolina, submerged in politieal boggery do earnestly seek for the New Tear a new leaf in govenimenti^ leaf throuidt which the blot of previous years has not come through. May oUr Governor stand forthright for the prin ciples be has publicly stated. May he demand action tlto AsMKmbly on issues that are essential to our wel fare. May he make* no political trade, but demand what is ri|^ and if his demands are not made may he let us, the people, know why. May our Legislature approach all issues with op-' en min(k. May they forget political ambitions when those ambitions must be submerged for our better ment May they not fight over trivial things when large things are at stake. May they not allow techni cal procedures and political intrigues to interfere with our advancement May all of our state officers perform all their'du ties as laid down by the Constitution. May they all work to the end that perfection is sought We pray that for the new year South Carolina receiving all this may go forward to the right and just place she deserves in this nation and whkh long, long . ago she had. May we in Deeember 1947 be able to say: ‘’’Well Done!” HAVE BECOME OBNOXIOUS Heavy drinking has become the nation^s out standing indoor and outdoor sports event Tou can*t go to a foptball game without being worried to death by the pie-eyed drunks everywhere in evidence. Drunks have made travel on the highways unsafe. And they have made travel in any kind of a public vehicle, bus, train, etc., disagreeable. Press stories last week told of a Gaffney couple, who were returning from Florida on a train when a sailor much the worse for imbiding of rot gut began tossing luggage from the speeding train. Two of six bags tossed into the swampy wasteland of Florida belonged to the Gaffney couple and contained hard-to-get clothing, jeweliy, etc. The Aiken Standard and Review in com menting on the above-mentioned affair remarks, **11ie experience of the Gaffney couple was a rather un usual one, but you never know what to expect when there is a drunk around—anything can happen from a killing to something not so serious.” THE CAMDEN .PHIgHIlC)^ CAMOEI^ tNUTH CAWOLINA, ENIDAY, pkCEMEEW ZT, IfSS, LOOKING AT 1947 There is a saying, or perhaps it is a song, which goes something like this: ”We've come a long ways together.” That's the way we like to think, about this com munity. Certainly the farmers, bankers, professional men, merchants, and this newspaper—with its sub scribers and ‘advertisers have come a long ways to gether. And we're going on—^togetiier—-to a greater year in 1947 than we've ever khown before. It may be a good thing, as some maintain, to stop and take stock, at the end of a year, to rewew, to ana lyze, and to resolve greater accomplishments in the New Tear. But it's never good to look back too long or too hard. Rather it is well to remember only the best, forget the worst, and look confidently ahead. We renew our pledge to you of service and coop eration. We reaffirm our faith and confidence in the community. We continue our warmth of feeling for all our friends and patrons. And we wish each one of yon, and all of you, A HAPPT NEW TEAR Christmas, 1946 Observed In Mas; Ways By Camden Parties, Dancea, Etc., All Figure. The above mentioned films, to* gether with various comedies have proved interesting to schools and gatherings where the films have been shown. ' This is part of the program of the South Carolina state commis sion of forestry to acquaint the public with what la being done to conserve tomorrow’s timber crop. It is the hope of Ranger L. E. Smith th|it the public attend these film showings when they are of fered in the respective communi ties. It is hoped that approximately 26 shows may be offered wrthin the period remaining, with programs being arranged for day and night presentatioiL Camden spent Christmas in a proverbial and conventional man* ner. Co<ditatt parties fer the peopla who could' afford to buy the neces sities for such an event; family gatherings of a more sedate de gree, riotous celebrations, few but hot, all featured the birthday of the Kins of Kings. In the Bpiecopal circles, the ad vent of tbe Nattvltj was ushered in with solemn and impressive com* munlon rites at Grace church. There the spirit of the occasion was tempered with gritf over the recent passing of Dr. Maurice Clarke, for 11 years rector of the church. The Junior League sponsored a Christmas ni^t dancins party, while last Monday night the Ker shaw County South Carolina club of the state university were hosts at a dancing party In the high school gymnasium.
