Flying in safety after a stormy
12>month journey, 1947 promises to
be a big year for all Americans and
we extend our, heartiest wishes to
erery one of you for a year filled to
•
*the brim with good cheer,
prosperity and health.
L AURETTE was dining alons In
her apartment, while oubide
the tempo of a New Year’s Eve cel
ebration grew in intensiUr.
It was quiet, sitting there by can-
dleli^t, a beautiful moment to re
flect back over the 12 months Just
ending—except that tonight was so
crucial! Tonight the vigil would
end, the problem would resolve It
self. But which way?
It was a strange thing they had
done. Just a year ago tonight,
while all New York was going mad
welcoming the Nfw Year with rau
cous gaiety, they had been sitting In
thb very room—yes, Harry over
there in the big arm chair and she,
Lauretta, in the very chair she oc
cupied at this moment "Laurie,'’
he used to call her; not "Laurette,”
the name everyone ebe used, but
"Laurie,” the convenient abbrevia
tion he had invented.
‘Tm a failure, Laurie,” he had
said. "Five years on thp same Job
with nothing; to show save a thhw
ning head of hair and an almost
empty bank account”
laurette remembered how she
had tried to comfort him, and
then ttie bombshell:
"No, honey,” he had said flatly.
*lt’s no use. We can’t be married,
for I’d merely be faMening a mill
stone around your neck. Tm leav
ing—having you right now!”
She had cried, protested, and then
he bad agreed to make a game of
It ns parting words, stm vivid,
were:
”If you’ll wan a year, Laurln

of mysdf by than, TD be back. A
year horn tonight If not wtU,
iprobahly you’ll nev« saa ase
agaia"
She still remembered the firm set
of hb shoulders as he walked out
the door that night, bound he knew
not where.
She remembered the questions
their friends had asked. Where was
Harry? Away on a long trip she
had replied, at flrst. Then she ^ad
ceased to offer excuses, and of
course the friends stopped asking
questions.
Only once bad there been word of
him. and then only vary feideflnite
news.
"I saw him getting into a cab on
Market street,” Bill Collins had told
her upon returning from a trip to
San rranebeo. "At least I think it
was Harry. Saw him only an in
stant, though, and I couldn’t be
sure!*'
