County to Have Field Scout
Executive
John K. delioach, chairman of the
county Boy Scout committee, has
announced the obtaining of a new
field scout exeentive, Joseph Hicks,
to serve Kershaw and Fairfield
counties. Mr. Hicks will make his
home in Camden and will work out
of the Central, S. C. Connell Boy
Scout headquarters in Columbia. It
la believed that scouting in our
county will take an upward start
with this added addition to the
council staff as his attentions will
deal only with the tVo counties.
Mr. Hicks graduatdd from Colnm-
bia high Rhool in 1941. After grad
uation he attended the University
of South Carolina for a short time
bat withdrew to Join the USA air
corp. In December, 1942, he was
made a flight officer receiving his
wings at Labback, Texas. After re
ceiving his wings he served over
seas for abont 18 months and on r»-
tnring home was commissioned a
second lientenknt. Later ha serve J
overseas again for about six months
and was made a first lieutenant
On return home he was made a
captain and shortly after received
his discharge the fall of 1945. He is
at present atendlng t^a national
training school for scout exeenthres
at Mendham, N. J., and wiU retnrn
to Camden about Jannary 1.
Troop 64 Hat Weiner Ronst
Instead of our regular meeting
last Wednesday night we went on
a weiner roast We met at the regu
lar time and place and went ont to
the river in a track.
Upon arriving we found that Nor
man Shealy and .Johnnie Peebles
had been out for several hours and
had the fire going and a good bed
of coals laid to roast the 'doggies.'
After the meeting was opened
with the Scoot Oath and Lews we
set in on the eats. Sandy Savage
easily being the chsmp of the night
with eight hot dogs, complete with
bans, catsup, mnstard, sanse^ ohlU,
■and and gravel. ^
We had a brief Initiation of the
new scouts. Randolph Shaylor,
George Barnes, Sterne Bolte, Dickie
Blchel, Robert Littlejohn, consisting
of a rope escape and a tow pnah-
nps.
We closed with the Great Scont-
masters Benediction and so back
to town.
