Applicants For
Relief Increase
In This County
The number of applicants for
public auistance in Kershaw coun
ty has been steadily increasing for
sevet-al months, and the amount of
assistance granted needy persona
has tnereased correspondingly, it is
learned” from the chairman of the
county board of public welfare, Nm*-
man S. Richards.
The number of applicants filed
in the county in August was 84; the
number applying In August, 194&,
was 18.' Assistance payments in
August totaled $11,179.86, while the
amount paid In August, 1946, waa
$8,474.08.
The chairman explained that
these Increases are due chiefly to
three things: the steadily rising
cost of living which increasqe the
number ot unemployable persons
whose available resources are in
adequate, as well as the amount
needed for subsistence; discontinu
ance of allotments and allowances
from men in tbe armed forces; and
decreased employment of elderly
people and motbers ot young chil
dren.
