New MmI bleachers which will ae-
commodate orer hOO persoos are being
Installed on the football field of the
Rock Hill high school. The steel
bleachers were acqair^ at a cost of
|2,2M and .will. api||mient the Qerman-'
ent stands which^^1 seat 6.000 spec
tators.
In addition to the securing of the
steel bleachers, the Rock Hill field is
being gfren an ntenslre renoTstion
program In which new fences, land
scaping of gronn^new ticket booths,
etc., are being attended to.
It is a lasting shame to a com
munity where 'football enthnsiasm
runs as strong as It does in Camden,
that the foDtbhll field and snrrosnd-
Ings are in such a messy state.
Speaking of football, fpns are urged
to see the splendid showing of grid
plctores In the west windotf of the
Mahoney Soda Shop. The pictures
were taken by Mac McCumber. who
has recently purchased a new press
camera. ThW are- outstanding in de
tail and sharpness.
the Camden tans had nothing to yell
about
Well, that's that Last year we took
a lacing from-the B-C boys orer on
a wet night in West Columbia, and
the Bulldog Snapped back like the
truly good athletes they are and hung
up a fine record for the season.
Tonight the boys will get another
big test, for the Harding Rams from
Charlotte, eren huskier than the
Bishoprllle team, are here. The
chances are that another big crowd
will be on band to see what kind of
a come-back their bulldogs can make.
Some of the fans were of the be
lief that the attendance at the Bish-
oprille game was about- the biggest in
football history here. But that is not
true. It lacked .much of attaining the
totals on hand in Sumter games here.
One of the pictures shows the front
of the Camden high school and is so
goo4 that we wager it would take top
honors in any landscape contest. The
pictures of the team,t-especially the
one showing Coach Plmee in confer
ence with CoClaptains Dallas Ma
honey and "Bnbba” Norris, are tops
lif sport Tlews.
The Wailing Wall
Camden football fans were stunned
OVOT the manner in which the Bisbop-
Yllle Highs swarmed orer their far-
oHte B^og Ulent last Friday night.
Howewer, llrery one who knows
football, admitted the better team
won. The Ylsltoro were heary and
rangy, they packed a punch in their
line attack that was dynamite. This
is indicated that they checked up 18
by Cam-
first downs as against 7 made
den.
Their defense was' excellent, Cam
den finding it to be of stone wall tea-
tufa.
J. O. Williams, BishopTille coach,
was a happy man, as was Boyd
Stokes, assistant coach. Remember
Boyd? He's the Blahoprllle pitcher
who worked for that team in the Pal
metto league and later Joined with
HartsTiUe for the finish drlra against
BennettsrlRe, florenoe and Klngstree.
Those former Camden Junior Le
gion baseball players, Jonas, DuBose,
and Woodham, were the stars for
Pate an
the inraders. Jones and DuBese were
hot potatoes to the Camden offense
breaking up the Bulldog attack again
and again. Woodhsiq did some aloe
ball totin’ as did Jones and Paile.
While it is a difficult matter to
control a crowd when the seating
facilities are minimum, it is hoped
that at future games, the police de

The BishopTille High Dragons sent
the Camden Bulldogs down to a crush
ing defeat last Friday night before the
largest opening game crowd in Cam
den history. The final score was Bi^
oprille 20, Camden 8. .
The crowd, estimated by high school
athletic officials at approximately
2J»80, including some 600 high school
students and fans from Bishoprllle.
These .rlsitlng rooters went into a de
lirium of hysterics as their Dragons
ripped and tore the Oamden defense
to shreds and roared to one.of the
most startling hl|h school grid upsets
in history.
It brought back momortes of a year
ago when the Camden talent took a
pasting orer in Brookland-Cayce from
Cyril Busbee’s youngsters,' 27 to 6.
For years it had been the custom for
Just to keep /pectators back of the
fence along each side of the playing
field. Hundreds of snull boys and
scores of adult raced up and down
the sidelines, following the progress
of the ball in play.
An excellent pli^ by play descrip
tion of the game wad given from the
east side of the field by 4 coast guard
recruiting unit equipped with loud
speakers and an axc^lent sportcaster.

Playoff Filial
South Carolina's greatest baseball
farce in history came to an end last
Wednesday night when the Kingstree
Royals defeated the HartsrlUe-Bish-
opillle combination by winning the
fifth and final game of the post-sea-
?son playoff by a score of 2 to .1
Kingstree had prertously won the
league pennant and went into the
playoff against Florence, Bennetts-
Tllle and HartsrUle. Hartsrille in the
effort to win added Bishoprllle pligr-
ers to their lineup. Stokes of Bish
oprllle pitched in sereral games of
the series. >
Now that the Palmetto league of
1948 has stepped off the stage, it is
the hope of aU baseball fans that tha
1947 product be a 100 per cent reuo-
ratlon. The league was, in the opinion
of the sport fans, a genuine msas. In
the closlxtg weeks, the leading teams
were permitted to grab players at
random from other teams. There was
an almost complete lack of organisa
tion and regulation.
Despite tha raoord-hreaklng open
ing game crowd, the ball lot i
