Before Furious Gun Berrafe
(Continued from first page)
Williams replied to the command
by fifing at Ashn^re, the bullet Just
grasing the head of the officer. Ash.
more had ducked with the flash and
slmulUneously bad fired at Williams.
Later it was found that one shot that
hit the negro had entered on the right
side and ranged upward to oome out
on the left side near the shoulder.
This is believed to have been the shot
fired by Ashmore.
Williams was still able to fight snA
hls rifle again biased. Ashmore then
ordered the posse members to “let
him have U” and guns began to blase.
Later, according to the offlesn,
it was found that vnillams had been
riddled In the abdomen a number of
jtimes. While conscious up to the
time of his depth and particularly
when found lying in s back room of
the cabin, he never gave up.
Ashmore had with him In the poess
C. L. McKinnon,- a etate officer, James
Hammopd of the State Highiway pat^
rol, a number of guards and sevsral
trustees.
The hunt for Williams was kept up
with unceasing vigor from the time
af his escape, and there waa no doubt
in the* minds of the officers bnt that
the convict would -.eventually be
takMi.

rest there <m a disorderly charge, the
subsequent finger-printing an^ the
discovery that he was the escapee
from the State camp, resulted In his
return to the Boykto farm.

file at the State penitentipry in Co-
lumbta. Williams was registered as

age. He was short,, in statute being
