At a meeting of the Kershaw Dis
trict committee of the Boys Scouts
of America held at the offic© of Hen
ry Sarage, Jr., recently, president
John K. deLoach appointed Reuben
Pitts, Jr., as finance chairman to
succeed Sam Karesh who is to serve
on the Organization and Extension
committee with George Mickle, _
George Mickle reported that a new
Troop, known as No. 58, is being
organized at Gates Ford.
A. C. McKaln reported that the
next court of honor was to be held at
the Methodist church In Bethune.
Executive Roscoe Stevens reported
that“ all of the 14000 necessary for
the Phillips foundation to put a new
field scout executive in Kershaw and
Fairfield counties has been raised. To
this 14000 will be added I25Q0 from
the Foundation. Of the $4000 raised,
the city of Camden citizens were rsr
sponsible for $1700.
Mr. Stevens recommended that the
district committee name an inter
racial chairman.
Wateree Cattle Are

Chris Lanham, owner of a Hereford
farm at Wateree, is the owner of
some of the most' outstanding cattle
to be found. Herdsman Ellis Arm
strong and Mrs. Armstrong are ac
companying a group'of show animals
to the Polled Hereford show and sale

When genial Jim Hammond, an
officer of the state highway patrol,
reported on the death of a mule as
the result of a collision between the
animal and an automobile, our first
reaction was to write a facetious ac
count of the affair and give H a
caption such as “Has His Last He-
Haw” or “Paging Ous Ward, steaks
on the Highway" but when we learn
ed something about the mule and how
she h^pened to be bit. w'e Just didn’t
have the heart to write light-heart

For Queen was a mule-that was ^
years of age and had been *at the
S. JC. Team farm in Lugoff for over
twenty years. Queen was a sort of
member of the family.
Last Tuesday Queen was sold to a
farmer who lives some five miles
from the Team' farm. Now Quecdi’s
new owner was a good man and
Queen bad a nicf stable to stay in.
But Queen became homesick after
being at her new home for a day and
Wednesday afternoon she started to
go back home.
She traveled along at a leisurely
gait. II was about 8:30 p. m., and
she was only a few yards from the
lane leading from the highway to the
Team place when her life was snuffed
out.
A Ford car, driven by Ira Lee
Blackmon, insurance agent and oc
cupied by Blackmon, his wife and
baby came along the hj;ghway from
Columbisi. The lights of west bound
truck prevented Blackmon from see
ing Queen. The rushing car struck
Queen, hurling her up and on to the
hood of the machine and killing her.
The occupants of the car were badly
shaken up, Mrs. Blackmon and baby
having to be cared for at the hospital
for a short time. Blackmon, badly
shaken up. escaped injury. «

Police are holding Bennie Gray,
Eugene Boykin and ’Thomas Kelly, all
colored, for the alleged burglary of
1135 from a cash register in the Susie
Fleming restaurant on Lower Broad
street late Saturday night.

, also colored, the three men were in
her restaurant at 11 o’clock at night
and a few minutes after they had
left she noticed the cash register
drawer open and $135 misipg.
She report^ to the police and
shortly after Patrolman McManus and
dlose had taken Gray, Boykin and
lover of good beef cattle, carried
along a number of nurse cows to take
care of the animals which are to be
shown.
Darnold and Donald, 4-H members
and sons of Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong,
are managing and feeding *the herd
while they are away on the trip.
The herd sire used on the farm is
a great individual and was purchased
for $15,000 last year. This animal
should prove a great benefit in the
present herd. As Ellis explains it “in
order to produce good cattle we must
begin with outstanding individual and
then plan for year-round grazing,
plenty of hay and silage."
W'estville Resident
Called By Death
Mrs. Henry R. Trueedale died Sat
urday morning at the Camden hos
pital. She lived in the Westville com
munity of Kershaw county, and was
a member of the Bethany Baptist
church.
