John P. Morgan, 49, of Bastover,
charged with the August 80 shotgun
slaying of Ehwtover Chief of Police,
Elijah A. Wilson, 66, was committed
to the State hospital last week for
examination, according to Sheriff T.
Alex Heise.

be postponed until next Tuesday.
Morgan became violent Wednesday
afternoon. Sheriffs officers reported

wall. He had entm-ed a “not guilty”
plea to the charge that he had mur
dered Wilson.

One man is in the hospital in a
critical condition by reason of bead
injuries and scores of others are
nursing bruise^ and lacerations as the
result of a verftable epldemk of auto
accidents on the highways du^g the
sleet storm last Thursday night.
Seven cars came to grief on the
long Wateree bridge between 9 and
9:30 o’clock when they got out of
control on the ice covered concrete
and skidded into each other and Into
the bridge abnttments.
James Price, age !28, who operates
a grocery store at Boykin, is in the
hospital with a probable fractured
skull as a result of his oar'"'crashing
into the concrete abuttment of the
bridge. Price is married and has two
children. ’They reside at Boykin.
All available wreckers were kept
active for hours Thursday night as
calls for help came from owners of
wrecked cars. Friday morning five
cars were taken from the ditch along
the highway between Camden and
Blaney. In every instance the cara
had rolled over after leaving the high
way.
A New Jersey car did a nose dive
into the ditch near McBee and while
the^top was badly crushed, the oc
cupants escaped serious injury. A
New York car was .hauled to a local
garage Thursday morning in a badly
shattered condition.
Driving was difficult late ’Thursday
afternoon and evening because of the
rain turning to ice as it hit wind
shields of cars, making for difficult
visibility.
The casualty list was not confined
to motorists. ’Two instances of people,
one man and a woman, taking
falls when they slipped on stepi
which were ice covered.
