sioner, and it will require extra care
on the i>art of both driver and pedes-
train to prevent suffering from the
result of traffic accidents.
Motoring accidents have increased
alarmingly since V-J Day reminds the
Commissioner and in the first month
of “flll-’er-up” driving the ‘ nation’s
traffic death toll went up 40 per cent.
The month after gasoline rationing
was lifted, almost .three times aa
many Americans were killed in traf
fic accidents as died in the bloody
battle of Tarawa said Commissioner
Williamson.
AcdifleQts in South Carolina also
skyrocketed immediately after the
llftidii of gasoline rationing and for
the two and one-half month period
from August 15 through October the
State’s traffic toll mounted to 92 per
sons killed and 447 injured in 649
serious accidents. The traffic toll of
this two and one-half month period
after gas rationing represented a 67
per cent increase over the same per^
lod of the previous year.
Driving on the wrong side of the
road, exceeding the lawful speed, fol
lowing too closely, failure to yield
right-of-way and disregard of stop
signs were the five leading violations,
in the order stated, that contributed
to this tragic accident record. If we
are to avoid the traffic mishap that
might change our Christmas holiday
plans our drivers should carefully
avoid these violations said the Com
missioner.
Sober driving with a little extra
care and a little less speed will offset
the extra haxards of Christinas' holi
day traffic^ and winter month driving
dangers, reminds this highway offic
ial.

The city of Camden tonight pays
tribute to the 1946 Camden high
school football squad, one of the
gamest aggregations to wear tbe col
ors of the Bulldogs.
The testimonial will be in the na
ture of a dinner to be given at the
Sarsfield club at 7:30 o’clock.
In as much as quite a number of
citlxens have purchased tickets tor
the dinner it is expected that some
seventy or more covers will feature
the affair. The city is host to the
football team and > cheer leaders.
Others Interested were able to plan
to be present through the purchase of
tickets the sale of which closed on
Wednesday.
The program tonight will be en
tirely Informal and It is reported
there will be a number of surprises
sprung during the evening. The let
ter men of the team will receive
their block C letters.<j
Shivering Camdenites welcome the
promise of the weather man that
warmer weather is on the way, but
up to the time, of this writing, it had
not arrived in any great quantity.
To Mr. Mitchell in North Carolina
went the plam? for recording the low
est temperature of the cold sprfl. It
being 4 degrees below sero.
In South Carolina the low readings
ranged from 12 above at Chester to
19 at Columbia. Camden turned in a
chilly 13 above reading which gave
it second place in the low brackeL
Up to Wednesday of this week the
weather recordings show seven
straight days during which sub-freez
ing weather had been reported. Mon
day’s low of 13 degrees was the low
est December reading in many years
it is said.
'The present cold spell has produced
its full complement of grief for Mr.
John Q. Public. Frozen water pipes,
disabled heating plants, clogged chim
neys and other unfortunate events
kept plumbers on the Jump in seek
ing to effect repairs. At the First
National Bank the < heating system
went wrong, but through the efforts
of the Bradley company, repairs were
made and business at the institution
proceeded without interruption.
