dents in South Carolina daring Oc
tober, 1$46. Thirty-one of this toUd
occurred on State highways. The to

increase of 11 per cent otst the total
of 36 in October, 1944. while on SUte
highways there was an increase of U
per cent oyer the total of 17. ^
'Nine pedestrains were killed and
five injured, as compared with 11
killed and 14 injured the same month
of last year. Seventeen of the killed

ed with the total of 19 far the same
month last year. Twenty-two pm- cent
of the totak deaths during October,
1946, were pedestrains.
EJleven of the persons killed were
drivers; 16 passengers; nine pedes
trains; and four bicyclists.
One hundred and ninety persons
were injured. Seventy-one were driv
ers; 104 passengers; fhre pedestrains;
2 bicyclists; 6 occupants of
drawn vehicle; and two occupants of
train.
The number of drivers involved In
accidents totaled 431. Two bundr^
and fifty-two drivers committed one
or more violations. Did not have right
of way was listed as the most com
mon violation, appearing in 41 in
stances. Forty-nine drivers were re
ported driving on wrcmg side of road;
36 were reported as exceeding lawful
speed; and 13 were reported as giv-{
ing either no signal or improper sig-l
nal.
Fifty^ine drivers were reported as
drinking while driving, as compared
with the total of ifl daring t£e same
month of last year. ^
Fifty-seven of the total reported ac
cidents occurred at intersections; 35
on curves or toms; and II on road-

tion Commission said today.
Every applicant for allowances,
whether for partial or total unem
ployment, or self-employment allow
ances, may be required to have a

sets up Hs records according to
Social Security Account numbers. Ap
plications for numbers should be
made at field offices of the Social
Security Board, conveniently located
throughout the state. "
The veteran shonld also take his
discharge certificate or sepcnration
papers with him when he goes to the
employment office to file his first
claim. The certificate must be stamp
ed showing that a claim for allow
ances has been filed.

With the return of some of the vet
erans of the war Just concluded there
promisea to be an awakening in the
ranks of the tennis enthusiasts.
The need for suitable oourts is be
ing taken care of through the use of
the oourts at the Camden Country
club grounds. These two courts locat
ed near the club house at the rear of
the old Kirkwood hotel site are being
put in playable i^ape. '
It is pix^iosqd •^to charge <mly a
nominal fee fof the use of the courts
for the balance of the club year,
which closes on March 21. Single
memberships have been fixed at |5
and family membershipe at |10. It
is hoped a sufficient number of play
ers will Join up and that a renewal
of tennis interest reminiscent of pre
war days may develope. Such a pro
gram would embrace match events
with players from neighboring com
munities and with weekly elimination
play scheduled each Sunday.
Tennis players who are interested
in this program should arrange to se
cure their membership with Shannon
Heath, chairman of the tennis com
mittee. In order that tennis may be
come a permanent fixture at the
club, the cooperation of all tennis
enthusiasts Is needed.
