In our corerage- of the Camden-
Brunswick game of Thanksglring
day, we purposely glossed orer the
facts, in so far as the miserable ex
hibition of poor sportsmanship offer
ed by the Coach, players and some of
the Branswlck fans was concerned.

. Since reading a Brunswick news
paper report of the game, we think
it only fair to the good name of Cam
den, that the tacts relating to the un
fortunate affair that came into the
spotlight that turkey day afternoon,
be giren publicity.

Says the Bmnswick paper In relate
ing a hearsay rersion of the Thanks-
glring day game "Local fans who at
tended the game said that In all their
football experience, they had nerer
seen a high school fooU^l team sub
jected to such treatment Some of the
fans went to Coach Page and urged
that he take his club off the fleld."

Now listen to this—"The fans said
said that at the end of the half the
Terriers (Brunswick players) had
completely outplayed the ^uth Caro
lina boys,' leading by a 6 to 0 score.
After the kickoff beginning the second
half, they reported that Paul Owens
grabbed the ball and raced 80 yeards
for a touchdown which was called
back, the referee claiming both sides
were slugging. Shortly thereafter, the
Terrier^ joadfi touchdown and
the cg^gsee again cimed^t back, claim
ing the boy with the ball stepped out
of bounds. On another occasion a Ter
rier ran to the 10 yard line and again
was called back. Tliel'e was a general
fight at one stage of the game when
Camden plklffra Jumped on a local
man. Both teams left their benches
and there was a general mixup. After

The thousands of spectators who
witnessed the game realise that the
unsportsmansbip offered by the Bruns
wick outfit here, was equalled only by
the false reports given to the Bruns
wick press. Not only were the l^«&s«.
wick players guilty of slinging, kick
ing, gouging on the field of play but
they made themselves so obnoxious
by their rowdy actions that some of
them were ejected from a hotel late
in the*-evening of the game day. Po
lice threats of locking some of the
more pugnacious of the group in the
city clink pat a stop to the bell-rals
Ing tactics.

Not all of the visitors wbre in the
rowdy classification. Some o^nly ex
pressed indignation over the actions
of their belligereilt companions.

Perhaps the outstanding event of
the game came In the final quarter
when the ‘ coach of the Bnmswick
team, a chap named Page, staged one
dl the most kiddish acts this writer
has ever witnessed in a sporting
event. Angered because the referee
bad called back a run that put a
Brunswick player into the end-zone,
Page walked out on the field and de-
libertly kicked the ball from where It
had been placed by the referee.

The offlcialf in charge of the game
here that afteriKX>n were not .picked
by Camden. They -were sent here by
the South Carolina Football Officials
association. None of the (Tamden team
officials Including Coach Pierce, knew
who would officiate until the officials
Irrlved shortly before the game. The
trio, by the way, rates as the best
In the state and has earned the praise
of sportwrlters and team coaches for
their intelligent handling of games.

As most of my readers saw the
game It is not necessary to go into
any extended details as to the silly
statements made In the Brunswick
story. The touchdown that was made
by the visitors after the kickoff fol
lowing Camden's second touchdown
march, and which was called back
would never have been but for the
Blogging of Camden tacklen by
Brunswick players. And the run along
the west boundary line would never
have gone beyond the 4S yard line, be
cause, Camden players and the two
offtciali near the play saw the Bmns
wick runner stop over the line at that
point

from Ross. Rnss scored one on a ten
yard mn and Pickett croesed the
Washington line once. Extra points
WM*e scored by Cooper, Roes and
Pearce.

crowd and was embellished by a pre
game parade from the Academy to the
football field. A float, gayly dressed

many hundreds of singing fans'parad

Carolina Class B championship by de

Beaufort Friday night by a score of

defeated Hsrtsville High last week
Wednesday before a record turnout
