After nearly three and a half years
in the service. Major Caleb Granger
Kornagey, is back in civilian harn.
ess and has taken over the supervis
ion and operation of the fine funeral
home here. Major Kornagey is mar
ried to the former Miss Saluda Dun
bar of Columbia. .
Major Kornagey achieved distinc
tion and honor in his army career
and wears a number of medals to
tell of his prowess. He also boastp
of a number of citatidnd and com
mendations, least of which was one
from General Ike Elsenhower.
Major Kornagey's splendid career
hinged around his affiliation as com.
mander of the 433rd Ordnance Motor
Vehicle Assembly ‘Company. This
unit activated in Atlanta in Septem-
ber 1943, not in a freshly painte*d
office with polished floors and panel
ed walls, but in a small pyramidal
tent, found Captain C. G. Kornagey
taking command on Jan. 5, 1944.
Previously connected with OTC the
Captain was instrumental in working
out and supervising the training on
the Post. In April of that year the
unit set sail on the British luxury
liner Queen Elizabeth, arriving in
Scotland on April 27. On May 4, the
unit began its overseas production
near Liverpool, England. On June
15 the unit went to Scotland by
motor convoy and for four months
was groomed for further
duty, this time in Prance.
On Aug. 12. 1944 the Unit received
orders to move and within a period
of thirty-six hours traveled BOO miles
with its entire equipment consisting
of 102 vehicles from Carnryan, Scot
land to a marshalling area near Part-
land, England, on the extreme south
ern coast.
On August 16 the first contigent
of the unit landed on Utah Beach and
three days later the first assembly
line was set up near Isigny, FYance,
about 40 miles from Cherburn. In
over a period of .eight weeks in that
area a total of 3,616 vehicles were
assembled. consisting of GMC’s
Dodges, Jeeps and trailers, ran8!ing
In size from one to ten ton.
Again on October 23, the Company
moved and this time set up at the
11th port In Rouen, France, While
in this area, 5666 vehicles had been
assembled and 1335 wheeler vehicles
servlcea. hese figures plus the 7,000
of task fdrce equipmenL adds up to
13,989 vehicles processed in five
months. An overall figure on over
seas production over a period of 11
months runs up . fO 17 896 vehicles
assembled, 12,445 vehicles serviced,
making a grand total of 30,341 ve
hicles assembled and serviced. In
addition 8,125 tons of cargo had been
transported. All these vehicles if in
one convoy would extend well over
1100 miles.
In a typed report on the activities
of this command, the following para
graph speaks for Itself and reflects
the pride that Major Kornegay right-'
fully feels toward this epic-mahing
group:
"Many factors have gone into this
human machine which has accounted
for its success. First, . tJie.. capable
leadership of its Commanding Officer.
His knowledge, experience and su
perb leadership have been dominant
in gaining the successes that have
been ours. The sincerity, loyalty and

Major Kornegay returns to Cam
den as the proud possesstu’ of the
bronze star which was Conferred on
him by General Joseph Phillips: He
also wears the meritorious service
plaque with one star. The citations
and letters of commendation for his
distinguished s^ice are Interesting
reading and reflect the success that
featured his leadership of important
units. All rates his commands as
being “superior”. One prized citation
is from General Dwight Eisenhower.
Major Kornegay had five different
commands during his period in ser-
vice. His first was that of command
ing officer of a unit training center
at the P’omona, Cal. Ordnance base
in 1942. His second was that of conS-
manding officer of a unit training
center at the Atlanta, Ga., ordnance
depot in 1943; his third was that of
commander of the 433rd Ordnance
M V A company; his fourth that of
commanding officer ot Depot 0162 at
Rouen, France and his fifth as depot
commander of 0M8 at LeHarve,
France.
