Aa a matter of long range planning,
bat one requiring immediate action,
the transportatioa and commonica-
tiona committee of the Chamber of
Commerce is taking the lead in an
effort to brihg one of the propoeed
United States super highways through
Camden. It is understood that these
super highways are part of a 25 year
Qoremment building program. There
fore it la vitally neceaaary that this
area make every ^ort to be included
in the asOsent plans if we are to
profit from the i^roposed highway de
velopment during the next decade.
Mr. R. M. Kennedy, St., chairman of
the transportation and communica
tions committee, has requested twen
ty-odd interested and influential Sooth
Carolinians to meet with a delegation
from your Chamber of Commerce in
Columbia on Sept. 18. The' purpose
of this meeting is to formulate plans
for presentation to the State Highway
commission at a meeting on Sept. SO.
The recent cancellation of sweet
potato contracts by the goremmeut
is being thoroughly investigated by
this organizstlon. We hare been re
peatedly assured by State and district
representatlres in Washington that
every effort is being made to clarify
this situation.
One of the few available buildings
suitable for housing new Industry in
this area has this week been leased
for occupancy In the near future.
This focuses attention on the fact that
the problem of acquiring new Industry
for Camden and Kershaw county is
not as much bhe of finding the in
dustry as it is one of flqding the
necessary building space to put the
industry in. For your information,
the industry is available if we had the
buildings to house It. Think that one
over. It Is requested that all avail
able space, large and small, suitable
for industrial use that Is now vacant
be registered at the Chamber of Com
merce office as soon as possible.
