officer at San Diego, Calif., for further

James M. Hough of Camden, an au
tomobile mechanic assigned to the
Hswaiisn Air Depot, Army Air forces,
has been promoted to corporal. Cpl.
Hough’s wife, Margaret, lives on route

Ralph O. Dabney, seaman, second
class, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T.
Dabney, route 2, this city. Is serving
aboard the U8S Zaurak to the West
ern Pacific. This vessel has success-
fully withstood 39 Japanese air at-
Ucks and is credited with the de
struction of two enemy planes.
, Carl N. Mahaffey, 33, fireman, 2nd
class, USNR, fought Dames, smoke
and crazily exploding sh^la for three
dramatic hours when the USS Eng
lish, a destroyer, went to the aid of
the Dre-rldden carrier USS Bunker
Hill, smashed by Jap suicide pilots
last May.
Antioch School
Opens Monday
The Antioch school, on ronte 2,
Camden, will open for the 1946-46 ses
sion on Monday morning. Sept 17, at
9 o’clock, according to D. K. Stokes,
chairman of the board of trustees.

Early Friday morning. Sept 14, the
big trucks carnrtog the tent seats aad
other equipment' required fqr the
Dixie Hayride, Big Tent Show, will
roll Into Camden and down to the
show grounds, and at once the tent
crew will start unloading and setting
up the big water-proof tent and plac
ing the two thousand seats for the
entartain’ment, which comes highly
recommended as one of the most e&-
tertatoing performances on the road
today.
Jack Gillette and his Tennessee
Ramblers will be seen on the streets
most any time daring the day as the
beys are constantly on the lookout
for new souvenirs and they boaat of
a collection from coaat to eoast. The
Tennessee Ramblers have Just recent
ly returned from Hollywood whwe
they have completed their fourteenth
movie, and they are scheduled to re
turn to the coast on November for
another pictnre. For twelve years the
Tenneesee Ramblers have been on
the road and to the movies having
worked with Gene Autrey, Tex Ritter,
Coin Belle and Scotty and many oth
ers, and they have been on the air
from WOR and WBT, as well as dos-
ens of other stations.

Enlist In Navy

It was announced at the U. S. Navy
recruiting station in Columbia by
Chief D. L. Jones, who is in charge of
Navy recruiting in this area, that
three Kershaw county men were en
listed in the Navy through his sub
station during August
T^ose enlisting were: ’Thomas Guy
Trimnal, route 2. Camden; Leonard
Frankie Lowery, Kershaw; Paul Wil
liam Napper, route L WestvlUe.
Chief Jonee stated that the Navy’s
chief need now to for both white and
colored men between the ages of 17
And SO for the regular Navy to release
^men who have had long, bard, war
duty. ’The period of enllsfment for
17 year olds to for minority. For 18
to SO the enlistment period to for tour
years. The ban on enlistments to the
18 to 80 year group was cancelled by
exeentive order and men to this
group who expect to enter the service
