Science of Fire Fighting
Mendel (Buck) Smith, who has
Just Completed a term as magistrate
for DeKalb township, has been ap.
pointed to the Fire Fighters Training
school at Shaw Field.
The appointment followed a civil
service examination in which Buck
rated high. He will go to Shaw Field
at once and begin an extended period
of instruction as a fire fighter trainee
after whlqh he will be eligible to ap
pointment as an expert In fire fight
ing. ^
The fire fighting school at Shaw
Field is conducted by experts and the
Information they dispense to the
trainees is of great value in the com
bating of, fires of every description.
Judge Smith will receive - w good
salary while in training. Howard
James, also of this city, is taking a
similar course of instruction at Shaw
Meld.

Cuts Foot While
At Bathing B^h
Donald Campbell, «eon of Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Campbell, Lafayette Are.,
and a senior in the Camden High
school, sustained a 'severe laceration
to a foot while at the bathing beach
of Hermitage lake. The cut, a deep
one, resulted from the young man
stepping on a Jagged piece of glisa
while walking in shallow 'water.
This la not the first time that bath
ers at this" beach have received cuts
because of glass from broken bottles.
The beach area is a trysting place for
couples late at night and usually the
empty bottles are thrown into the
water. Many are broken and'^it is
these broken pieces that constitute
such a hazaitL

Potatoes For School
The Midway hot lunch prograin re

through the surplus community pro
gram this week to be preserved for
future use.
Being that there was no other way
to keep them the canning committee,
consisting of Shannon Melton, liomuel
Faulkenberry and Rudolph West have
canned them. Under the supervision
of Mrs. Otis West, Home Ek:. teacher,
the J. H. A. girls are rendering a
valuable service in the canning
There is a possibility of more com
modities being received, which will
also be preserved.' This is one of the
many things the F. F. A. members
participate in.
