Mayfield of this city, and the late Athol H. Miller of Columbia, has been presented with the Silver Star Medal by Vice Admiral J. S. McCain in the name of the Prfsident of the United States. The citation given in connection with the Silver Star medal award states: “For distinguishing himself conspiciously by gallantry and in- treg^ity in action while |u;ting as Commanding Officer of a destroyer on October 24, 1944. While engaged in the salvage and rescue operations for the aircraft carrier while under enemy air attacks, he skillfully and courage ously maneuvered bis ship and was of great assistance in the attempt to control the fire in the aircraft car rier. This be did in spite of great danger from repeated explosions. His courage and skill in placing his ship close aboard the damaged carrier resulted in the reycue of many offi cers and enlisted men. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest tnlditlona of the United States Naval Service.” Commander Miller was in charge of the U, S. S. Irwin and the carrier re ferred to in the citation was the Carrier Princeton, which was set afire, and sunk by the Japs. Com mander Miller’a handling of the Irwin in bringing bis ship into a position of Jeapardy—no criticism If hs does not risk it—^was akillfully accomp lished. Ex pertly maneuvering bU ship and di recting her fire, Lieut. Commander Miller provided excellent gunfire sup port for assaulting troops ia the initial landing at Seeglittl, Sicily. August Kohrf, 111, who made his home with his auoL Mrs. Qus Hlrsch, Broad, street, during his school days in Camden, and who ia now in bis fifth year of service for his country, is with a chemical unit in the PhUlipines. Lieut. Kobn lived with Mrs. Hirsch from the time he was six years of age. His father, David Kohn, Sr., is a resident of Washington. Lt. Kobn has scores of friends.
