The Camden and Kershaw county
agency of the Sinclair Oil Refinery
company has been taken over by C.
E. Watts, who for several years has
been Identified with the Gulf Oil
company here.
The Sinclair agency, wholesale
and retail, has been operated by W.
T. Radfeam for some years.
The Sinclair filling station at the
corner of DeKalb and Market streets,
will In the future be under the man
agement of E. H. Watts..
Already the premises are being
renovated and the station will be one
of the most attractive on the high
way.
Lewis EL Barfield
Dies At Oak iQ^e
Lewis E. Barfield, 7C, died suddenly
Tuesday of last we^ at his home In
the Oak Ridge section of Kers''sw
county. He lived his entire life in
this community, where he was a pro
gressive farmer and Was a responsible
cltjzen. Funeral services were con
ducted by the R^v. J. T. Outen and
the Rev. J.. M. Neal and Rev. Ekiwards
of Kershaw.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs.
Emma Bowers Barfield; two daugh
ters, Mr*; Clyde Horton of ^
thune, and Mr*. Henry Davis of C*B^.
satt; two sons, Lewis Barfield' of
Kershaw, and Eklwa,rd Barfield of
Camdfn; 20 grandchildren, one broth
er. D. A. Barfield, and one sister, Mrs.
Y. L. Copeland, Irath.of Kershaw, sev
eral nephews and nieces.

7. Hacks: To be shown at a walk,
trot and canter, and Judged by their
ability to give a good^ ride, mouth,
manners and temeprament to be
especially considered.
8. Horsemanship: Open to chil
dren 14 years of age and under, Coin-
petltjoa to ride at a walk, trot and
canjer, and to be Judged on hands,
seat and general horsemanship.
9. Hunted Hacks: To be shown
at a walk, trot and canter, and oeer
two 3 foot Jumps in the ring.
lO. Family Pair Class: Open to
two members of one family. Horses
to be shown abreast at a walk, trot
and canter, and judged on perform
ance as a pair and general appear
ance.
Whereas the first show was given
without an admission charge, this
show will have an admission fee of
25 cents per person levied, the pro
ceeds of the gate to go to the Ameri
can Red Cross.
Box lunches and soft drinks will
be sold from 12 o'clock, noon, on, by
the Canteen unit* of _the Kershaw
Ck>unty chapter of the AmeriqaQ Eed
Cross.

taxi line stated that from the report
made to him by Shirley, there*were
two cars parked on the road, one be
ing almost in the center. According
to the taxi driver It was a case of
ramming Into the rear of one of the
cars or taking the ditch. It is'claimed
the driver did not know the Thomas

hand's car and was in the ditch at
the time. .
The report of the death of the
mother of nine children aroused much
indignation throughout the community
and renewed the flood of complaiht
that has been gathering force of late
against the reckless manipulation of
taxis about the city. High speeds on
residence streets, brilliant headlights,
negotiating of corners at high speed,
operating in left traffic lanes, these
are but a few of the sources of com
plaint
Other complaints point with indig
nation to the wear and tear on tires
by the sudden starting and abrupt
braking of taxis.
Mayor McCorkle issued a statement
Monday afternoon to the effect that
he intends to see that this flood of
complaints regarding the reckless
operation of taxi cabs is given a
thorough investigation. It is pointed
out that there is a taxi commission of
three members of the city council and
this group may be called upon to
pass lodgment upon the complaints
that have been made.
‘‘I’m giving the chief of poMbe
orders today to grab those traffic
vtolators, whether H be for speeding,
abrupt comer ‘turns or having too
bright Uidtta." said the mayor.
“Reckless dicing will also come in
for invastigstlbn,** he added.
Kershaw Child’s
Funeral Is Held
Funeral services for Betty Doris
Bowers, two-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Sam Bolrers of Kershaw,
who died in the Lancaster hospital
after three weeks of Illness, were con
ducted at tl o’clock Thufsdsy orisit
week at the Bethany Baptist church
near Westville. Besides her parents,
the child is survived by one sister,
Mary Ann Bowers, her maetmsl and
paternal grandparents.
