With Army casualties steadily in
creasing, General of the Army. George
C. Marshall, chief of staff. U. S.'Army,
has announced the opening of a re
cruiting' derive to enlist WACs for the
newly created Women's Array Corps
medical unit, for service at the Army’s
60 general hospitals in this«^country.
W’omen qualified for training as
medical and surgical technicians and
other skilled women, are urgently
needed for these hospiul units to aid
in the care and rehabilitation of re-
turned soldlqrs. More than 8.000 ad
ditional WACs are required for this
purpose

516 Ckesnut street, Camden, recently
was awarded the Bi^ze Star for
heroic achievement in' action.
He is serving on the Fifth Army
front in Italy with the 136th Infantry
regiment of the 94th "Red Bull’’ di
vision. Working ten hours under ha
rassing enemy fire, related the award
citation. Rush and three comrades
built a supply and evacuatioa device
for a company laolated by a swollen,
turbulent river from the remainder
of the battalion. Rush and his com
rades had voluntarily taken on the
hazardous task, knowing that other
stiPtnpls had failed and that there
had been near drownings.
Rush’s courage -fnd initiative bol-
stered the morale of the isolated com-
jjany and enabled them to hold an
otherwise untenable pocitton.

Mr. John Hinson of Lugoff, has re
ceived a telegram from the war de
partment stating that his son, Pfc.
EMdie Hinson, was slightly wounded
in action the 9th of February in
France. Pfc. Hinson has been serving
overseas for 30 months.
Mr. and Mrs. K. C. fitters have re
ceived notice that their son. Cpl. An
derson fitters, was wounded in the
Pbillipines on Jan. 6. He has received
the ^onze Star and Presidential ci
tation for bravery.

Lt August Kohu, son of Mr. David
Kohn. formerly of Greenville, now of
Washington. D. C., and nephew of
drs. Gus Hirsch, and who graduated
from Camden High • school several
years ago, writes that he is Interested
in Camden news, specially that con
cerning his friends in service. He
las been serving on overseas duty
for three years, receiving his com
mission while in Australia. His broth
er. Capt David Kohn, Jr. has also
been overseas for sometime and Is
now serving at the Transportation
Headquarters In Paris.
Staff Sgt. Delmar McLaughlin,, son
of Steve L. McLaughlin of Cassatt
has Just received his promotion from
Sgt. to Staff Sgt. He is a squad leader
with the 83rd Infantry division In
Belgium.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Cureton have
received the Purple Heart that was
swarded their son. Pvt Prank Cure-
ton, for wounds received in FVsnee.
After two months In a hospital he Is
back with his outfit, a medical Det.,

48 states and to the Commissioners
of the District of Columbia, asking for
local aid. General Marshall sald^ ‘‘The
care of the increasing numbers of
casualties returning ki ithe United
States, together with the aeute short
age of nurses and hospital personnel
generally, necessitates urgent megs-
ures being taken to recruit and rapid
ly train women for aervlce In Army
hospitals. We urgently need "WAC
units for our sixty general hospitals.
Your leadership In recruiting these
women will be of great service to the
Army."
It ts planned to assign a company
of 100 women to each of the 1,000-bed
hospitals and an additional company
of the same size for each additional
1,000 beds in the larger hospitals.
These companies will be made up of
medical and surgical technicians prim
arily, but will include some women
with administrative and clerical skills.
Under an accelerated training pro
gram, qualified women will be assign
ed to a hospital unit as students after
aix weeka of basic military training
and six weeks at an enlisted tech
nicians' school.

Miss Betty Jane Sarrett, daughter
of R(<ed Ssrrett of this city, is one
of the students of the Woman’s col
lege at Greensboro, N. C., whose work
in industrial design was exhibited in
connection with the second annual
Arts Forum at the college.

cent graduates in the fields of indus
trial design, textile design, painting,
costume design, illustration, gesture
drawings, wood abstractions and
magazine cover design makes up the
student division.

A fuel truck loaded with high teat
gasoline, belonging to the City Oil
company, caught fire on DeKalb St.
near Fair Saturday aftnreoon.
The fire ii believed to have start
ed from the exhaust pipe. Fortunately
the gaa burned without exploding.
The blaze was finally controlled by
the Camden Fire department. The
truck was badly damaged.
