Women’s Army corps are performing
valuable services, aiding medical offi
cers and Army’ nurses in caring for
sick and wounded soldiers.

Some of these WACs assigned to
the Medical department drive ambu
lances, staff cars and Jeeps. Some
work as medical -technicians, giving
biological tests, typing blood for
transfusions, making blood counts and
preparing vaccines. Others are surgi>
cal technicians, preparing surgical in
struments and often assisting in the
operating room.

partment also are X-Ray technicians,
dental technicians, orthopedic techni
cian aides, psychiatric assistants, oc
cupational therapy assistance, ednca-
tional recondition personnel, pharma
cists, medical stenographers, librari
ans, clerks and stenographers.
Whatever their Jobs may be. these
WACs know they are helping to re
store American fighting men to
health. Qualified specialist are as
signed to Army hospitals immediately
after their basic military training.
Women without technical experience
but with high school diplomas receive
six weeks of basic military training
followed by three or four months of
instruction at the Enlisted Technician
school
Women between 20 and SO years of
age can secure full details about the
WAC by contacting the U. S. Army
Recruiting Station at Post Office in
Camden, S. C.
ARRAIGNED
In recorder’s court Monday Robert
Carlos was arraigned on a charge of
selling milk without a permit. Com
plaint in the case was filed by George
.Mickle, local health officer.
Carlos, who is colored and who
resides at 1807 Campbell street, re
quested a Jury trial. The court Gxed
the time of the trial for next Monday
at 10 a. ra.

Pfc. Alvin W. Hunter, a son of Mr.
and Mr:). Dock Huntey of Kershaw,
route 1, ha8~been~awarded the bronxe
star for outstanding bravery and hero
ism in action in France on Sept. 27.
During the defense of a bridgehead,
h one and a half ton truck loaded with
ammunition and gasoline was set
afire by shell bursts from enemy ar-
tlllery.-
Pfc. Hunter, accompanied by two
other enlisted men of the Headquart
ers company, 3rd battalion, 319th In
fantry of the 80th division, with total
disregard for his own personal safety,
remained to battle the flames and
finally succeeded In doing «o' before
the ammunitinn and gasoline caught
fire and exploded.'
•Major General Horace L. McBride,
commanding officer, awarded Hunter
the brraze star, commending him for
his brAwry aod devotion to duty, de
claring ne exemplified the nhest “tra
dition of the armed forces of the
United States.
Hunter entered the service in July
1942. He became a first class private
in October of the same year.
Lt Geo. Hendrix
Now An Instructor

Lt. George T, Hendrix, Jr., son of
George T, Hendrix, 1202 Mill St.,
Camden, was assigned this week as a
flight instructor at the Fort Worth
Army Air Field, Fort Worth, Texas.,
a unit of the Central Flying Training
command.
Recently returned from Saipan and
KwaJallen where he had been station
ed sine# last April, the Lieut, was
commissioned in Sept., 1943.
Originally an Infantryman, Lieut.
Hendrix received his early flight
training at Muskagee, Okla. Enid,
Okla., and Kelly Field, Texas, where
he became a flight officer In Nov.
1942.
