Cross headqilarters. on North Broad
street.
Through the efforts of the league a
‘‘aerrice wires" club has been organ,
ised and meets every mid-week night
to fold Red Cross bandages.
These "war wldowa" are doing a
splendid job, according to Mrs.
George Creed, and have stepped up
the completion of monthly quotas in
this county.. The "wives" find their
evenings full of interest and it has
proven greatly beneficial to the war
effort.
All young ladies who are'Interested
in joining In this fine work are re-
quested to drop in at the Red Cross
headquarters any Wednesday evening
between 7:30 and 0:30 o’clock. A
pleasant evening for them means help
for s wounded soldier.
Cpca-Colas are generally served dur
ing the evening the “wives" work.

“Uncle" Bob Dixon, who served
three generations of the Johnson fami
ly over a period »f 75 years, and most
beloved of*'all negroes In Kershaw
county died at his home near Liberty
Hill on Thanksgiving day at the age
of 90 years.
The affection and esteem In which
this beloved colored man was held
was reflected in "the hundreds of ne
groes and white people who filled the
New Grove church near Liberty Hill
last Sunday when the funeral service
was held. White friends , of many
years standing came from Camden,
Liberty Hill, ^lumbla,< Charlotte and
other points to attend the funeral
rites.
Uncle Bob served the Johnson fami
ly through three generations. His
first employer was W. E. Johnson,
his second W. E. Johnson, Jr., and R.
C. Johnson, and his* third. Miss Hen
rietta Johnson, who resides on Lyttle-
ton street in this city. Uncle Bob
was a farmer all of bis life in the
same community. On Saturdays he
would work as a blacksmith at Liberty
Hill and would then n'tmirtaCamden
to work the remainder of the week
for the Johnson family. Members of
thrs^ ramUy reniember him for hts
faithfulness and his fine character.
From the time when he was a mere
boy in 'his teens, he has been identi
fied with the Johnson families. Uncle
Rob was small in statue but very tall
in character.
Sgt James Gandy
C^ts Air Medal
_Sgt. James M. Gandy has been
awarded an air medal for oonsplclous
bravery In air action. ' He is a gun
ner on a B.2i Liberator and is sta
tioned at a base in England.
Sergeant Gandy is a graduate of the
Camden jilgb school and attended
Clemson college. He received his
basic training at Miami Beach and
his gunnery training at Harlingen.
Texas. Further training was received
at Tonapah, Nevada. He went over
seas in August.
Congress is now preparing to give
the-•public^the about tho--cig
